Help! South Wales borderer ww1.
« on: Monday 07 November 05 15:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone. A new day a new topic!
I'm looking for an

Arthur George Hopkins
born 1898 as far as his son thinks [my grandad]
He was born in scarborough and lived there all his life.
My granddad believes he signed up for service in the first few days of the breakout of ww1  convincing them he was 18  successfully.
He served in the South wales borderer's [battalion number unknown.]

My granddad mentioned he served as passchendaele and was shot through the eye in an attack on enemy trenches. He also mentioned that possibly Canadians recovered him two days later if this has any significance [were canadians next to his unit].

when I asked what he was doing joining the south Wales borderer's in scarborough he said he didn't have a clue why.

Thats all i have to go on I tried checking the national archives site which came up with nothing [im guessing his was one of the records destroyed during ww2.]

a census result or a service record would make his year. My granddad would love absolutely anything as his father never talked about his experiences and only found out from his older brothers what is listed above.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks Will

Wow that is strange. His unit must have been folded into other regiments because of losses or something. Do you know if the medal card would show any signs of which battalion of the regiments he served in? I'm just looking at each regiments history and the Cheshire for example had 36 battalions! My mums said i can buy the card later so ill post whats stated in it.

Ive had a talk to my dad about the whole subject and my dad seems to remember my granddad showing him a picture of Arthur George Hopkins with his two brothers of which one he believes was in the the royal airforce at the time of ww1. Could anyone find a 1901 census please this would be a great help and would confirm the brothers age and names which would give me something to start looking with. I'm going to ring my granddad tommorrow as my mum says he l be to tired to get all his info now.

From what research has been done

Arthur George Hopkins was definitely born in scarborough in either 1898 or 1899
from what my mum remembers he had many brothers and sisters most older than Arthur

Any help would be appreciated Will

p.s sorry its a bit vague

After downloading my great grandads medal card I found that above the stated regiments he served in there were three strokes on what looked like a tally does anyone know whats this may mean? I'm hoping that this refers to which

battalion he served in the card is at the link below
