Public house info
« on: Tuesday 08 November 05 22:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find more information about  a pub  - Ballot Box in the Horsenden Hill area.

I believe my gggrandfather  William Wooster was publican there sometime before his death in 1916.

Any leads on information about the pub would be great.

Thanks
Becky

Hello Tomm and Becky,

My dad grew up in Bourne View- my grandparents had the house from new in 1934,cost them £595.  ;D ;D ;D

My mum and dad did their courting on Horsenden Hill- and every Saturday night all the family would walk down to the Ballot Box- this would be in the late 1940's.

Seeing the name again made me smile....and stirred memories of the hours I spent in the playground opposite the pub, staying with my gran in the school holidays.

Hope you find the info you need.

Regards

Carol

Hi,

Thanks for your replies, and Carol I'm glad I've stirred some pleasant memories for you.

I am interested in what the pub will have been like in the early 1900's - particularly photos of what it was like.

Tomm - what is it like now adays (is it the sort of place that has an old look to it and worth a visit or wold I be disappointed!)

Thanks
Becky

Hello to you both.

Carol everything is as you have remembered, the Ballot Box has not changed at all and is still thriving.

Becky I don't know how far you would have to travel but, if you would like a photo that would not be problem, just let me know.

Just snippit of information for you both.

In the old Victorian days the original pub was on the Percival side of horsenden lane nearer to the grand union canal. The pub got it's name from the fact that it was used as a polling station by the people working the canal boats coming from London carrying the refuse from the city, as these were along the banks of the canal as far as greenford so hence the name Ballot Box.

The ruins of the old pub are still there, but I cant tell what happend to the pub,
I'll make inquiries locally and see what I can find out and wiil keep you posted.

Regards Tom.

Hi Becky,
Wooster is also my ggrandfather and i have all the details regarding the ownership of the Ballot box in my mothers scrap book, which is in my loft. I shall try and get the information down later in the week. I could always scan the info and email it to you. I'm looking at my family tree, are you related to Toni King?

Hi,

Wonderful - someone else hunting this line  ;D

I do not know of a Toni - but that doesn't mean I am not related.

I shall PM you.

Best wishes
