Francis in London

Hi Can anyone help us we are reserching my wifes family tree and have got back to her Great Great Granddad Joseph Edmund Francis d.o.b 1848 in Marylebone it says. We have gone as far as 1881 he is living at 2a, Green Lane, Croydon, Surrey with hes wife Jane d.o.b 1845 Croydon Surrey and chilren but we cant seem to find him before this if anyone could help we would be grateful.

Hello, Joe,

I saw with interest your entry for any info on Joseph Edmund Francis as I have been chasing my own Francis family round Clerkenwell, & St Pancras areas for many years, tho' I have not come across a Joseph in my own line.

I have found Joseph Edmund Francis with his family in the 1881, '91 & 1901 censuses & have found the following in the IGI.

I have not been able to find Joseph in the 1871 census, perhaps he is a lodger somewhere.
Also, the places of birth are a bit adrift, perhaps it was easier for the parents simply to say they were all born in Croydon

Hello joeboyce.   I may be a bit late with this information but it seems your wife and I are related.  My Great Grandparents were Joseph Edmund Francis and Jane ( Hobbs ) Francis.   I am descended from their eldest daughter Ellen Mary.  Joseph and Jane had 6 children one of which died an infant, they also adopted or fostered at least 2, ( I have group photo dated 1897 ). I think the place is Thornton Heath.  Joseph's parents were William Francis and Mary Jane ( Mead ) Francis  ( my G G  Grandparents ). Jane Hobbs parents were Thomas Hobbs and Sarah ( Heath ) Hobbs, ( also have photo of them in their later life ).
