1891 Census - Charles Woolridge - He's Vanished!
« on: Saturday 12 November 05 19:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Charles Woolridge b.1839 and his family lived around Shaftesbury and Motcombe for many years. Their last child (I think it was the last) was called Merthyr George Woolridge and Bapt in Shaftsbury in 1887. The family then just disappear. With a name like Merthyr, do you think they could have gone to Wales. Can't find them in 1901 either.
Any help really appreciated.

Regards,
Inchworm  :)

:D Hi INCHWORM....This is a mystery as i have found a Charles with right credentials but different wife? than in the 71. I checked the 1891  Wales Census and found this...

Charles Wooldridge 50 Baker Shaftesbury Dorset(although transcript states born Canterbury as all other people above him)
          Emily Wooldridge 47              Shaftesbury
          Albert       son            18
          Arthur       son            14
          Issac         son             5
          Hessy dau                  9
Holda dau                   2  All Born Shaftesbury

All living Maud Street Roath Glamorgan
 Rg12/4385 Folio 37 page 68

I couldnt find Anna E in the 1891 or death entry for her either or any entries which related to the child that you mentioned could have been their last child, but it is quite easy to track William c Wooldridge the child from the 71 census. I've posted the info above but of course he may or may not be your Charles! And then again the  person taking the details for the census could have misheard Anna E as Emily( just possible!!!!!)

Many thanks  :D.
Charles wife was Anna Emily and I have found her as Anna or Emily on previous baptisms of the children.
Please, would it be poss. to check if they were still there in 1901 or if they had come back to Shaftesbury.
In fact, any Woolridge/Wooldridge people born in Shaftesbury living in Wales in 1901.
Their son Merthyr George Wooldridge was buried in Shaftesbury in 1888.
Their dau. Emily Reta Wooldridge married Herbert Reynolds in Cardiff area and I would like to find them too. Some of the other older children might have married too.

Again, many thanks for your help,
Inchworm  :)

Hello Cheryle  :),
Many thanks for you help, it has been a lot of help.
The Charles that you found is the son of Charles and Anna Emily Wooldridge.
Anna Emily died in 1906 Cardiff but can't find where she and Charles (snr) were in 1901. Sometimes she is down as Anna or Emily. Don't know where or when Charles died.
Their son Arthur Henry married in 1897 Cardiff, can't find him in 1901.
Their dau. Emily Reta married before the 1901 census in Cardiff to Herbert Reynolds. Can't find them. As Emily Reta is an unusal combo perhaps it's better to try without a surname.
I would love some more help if it's not too much trouble.
Many thanks for what you've found so far,

Inchworm  :)

What about these in 1901? Enumerated as "Loveridge" -

RG13/4978 Folio 86 Page 30
107 Cairn Street, St John, Central Cardiff
Charles 57 Labourer Dorset Shaftesbury
Emily 55 Wilts Salisbury
Isaac 12 School Dorset Shaftesbury

Living next door with husband Ebenezer is a 19 year old Hetty Davies, (also born Shaftesbury)I notice in 1891 your Charles and Emily had a 9 year old daughter "Hessy". Could this be the same girl?

Catherine

Hi Catherine  ;D,
How very clever of you to find my Charles. Yes, it does look like Hetty living next door is their daughter.
I can not find her birth at all, to see what her correct first name was. Have tried Bapt. in Shaftebury and Free BMD. As for the last child - why was she called Holda? Strange. They had a dau. Sarah Holdaway Woolridge in 1880, but that can't be her. Unless age is wrong on census. Don't know where the Holdaway comes in as mothers maiden name was Burbidge. Wonder where she was in 1901?
Could their dau. Emily Reta that m. Herbert Reynolds be mis transcribed? Would like to find her too.

Thanks ever so much for your help, very much appreciated.
