Has anyone got any information on cargills that lived in forfar.   Information so far is my great great grandad was John Cargill and he married a Jean Roberts in 1842, he was a master mason and the appeared to live in ferryton cottage in forfar and members of the free church.  They had 3 maybe 4 children , my great granny being Elizabeth the eldest, there was also William and Alexander. My great granny was married in 1865 to a James Cantley and moved to Edinburgh.
Would be wonderfull to hear from anybody that knows about them or has info.

Cheers Jo

Hi Jo!

The International Genealogical Index (which can be searched at www.familysearch.org) shows that John Cargill and Jean Roberts married at Forfar on 2nd Jan 1842.

It has records for 4 of their children (all born in Forfar)...

Elizabeth      born 11th Jan 1843 & christened 25th Jan 1843
Magdalena   born 21st April 1844
William         born 14th Mar 1846
Alexander     born 10th June 1848

There is also an entry for a John Cargil who was born on 23rd April 1810 and christened on 25th April 1810 at Forfar. He was the son of William Cargil and Magdalene Salmond who married on 18th July 1807 in Forfar.

Hope this helps!

I have just started looking and  have an 1885 William Cargill marrying a Magdalene Burns, and all it says for his mother is Isabella Cargill (daughter of a baker) there is no father mentioned?? Williams residence was Carluke.  I know he is my Great Grandfather, but kind of stuck from there?

Hi
A flatmate of mine married an Alf Cargill in the 1960s in Brisbane.  He died just a few years later.
Sorry, don't know any of his FH.
