1851 Lookup
« on: Tuesday 15 November 05 04:11 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find a Stephen Davis born abt 1831 County Armagh and Mary Ann Marks born abt 1829 County Armagh.  Stephen's parents were possibly Stephen and Jane and Mary's were John and Mary Marks.  Thanks heaps.  I know they were married 1854 at Tandragee County Armagh but their first child was born in 1855 in Australia.

Hello abcdef,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

In case you were hoping to find this family in 1851 census- the first complete census of Ireland is 1901. Only a small fragment of earlier ones for a few areas still survive.
