Glasgow street name
« on: Friday 18 November 05 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know the location of Tarbert (or Tarbet) Street, in Glasgow Central district? I had relatives there in the 1860's, but cant find any suitable maps online to read.

Have a look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/  .... enter Glasgow in the search box and you'll have a choice of 3 areas .... Glasgow lanarkshire is Glasgow central area circa 1865

Hi there,

I have family who were at Tarbet Street in the 1890s, which was near Rottenrow.  I don't believe it exists anymore, as Strathclyde University's campus covers most of that area now.  You can see some old pictures of the area at http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/vm/

Cheers,

Thanks Clare; its so helpful to have these links to go; Glasgow and surrounding areas just happen to be parts of Scotland that I know very little about, in terms of history. Looking up old street names from the censuses is really fascinating.

The link below lists the street names from the 1881 census for that part of Glasgow. Tarbert Road is listed under Enumeration Districts 19 and 20. The others listed for these districts were presumably nearby roads.

Hi there,

What a great link!  That is really very handy.  I had a quick look at it and it seems to bear out the theory that Tarbert Street was in the Rottenrow area.  It seems that rather a lot f these streets have now vanished under the University's buildings, although Rottenrow, Monstrose Street and Taylor Street are still there.

Cheers,
Clare

Hello again, I've just noticed that 'Tarbet Street' is listed under Enumeration Districts 10 & 11 of the link I gave. This could be a section of the same road.
