Rock Island Illinois Marriage certificate
« on: Friday 18 November 05 17:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am in contact with the county clerk in Rock Island Illinois regarding ordering a marriage certificate from 1860, but no matter how many times I ask they fail to answer what information a marriage certificate contains !!!!

Could someone please tell me what information is recorded on an American marriage certificate

      Thanks in advance
    Roy

Hi Roy!

I think American certificates have the same information as English certificates - Bride Groom Fathers of both and their occupations and witnesses - not too much difference!
Heres NARA - maybe it will give you some other ideas of avenues to pursue !

Thanks Annie for replying, but I've just bit the bullet , and ordered it from Illinois. After I'd ordered it , I asked the girl if they would mind emailing me the grooms father's name (That was going to be the main check) to which she replied that in the early days it will just say

Grooms name married Brides Name, nothing else !!!!!!

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Bit of a waste of $17 methinks

Cheers

Hi Roy!

Do you have them on any census ?
Post some names and dates and let's see if anybody can find something for you!

It's a long story Annie, but here's a summary

In 1901 my great grandfather had a niece staying with him called Besty A Lees aged 41 , born US of America, so that got me searching in America. On 1880 Census for America, Betty A Lees aged 20 is living in Rock Island Illinois with father Thomas Lees (Familysearch.org). I have now taken free 14 day trial to Ancestry, and traced her back to 1870 aged 11 with Thomas Lees. In 1860 she is not with Thomas Lees, but daughter of James Lees, also living in Rock Island Illianois.

In 1860 James is married to a Matilda, but there is no sign of them in 1870 , and their daughter seems to have gone to live with Thomas. On the 1880 census, looking at the image on Ancestry , there is something written before Daughter, but it is unreadable.

Also Jerry had three brothers, Thomas, John and James. and I have found a Thomas going to America in 1848, but cant find his wife and daughter going with him

All dates tie up within a year or so, but I would just like one real piece of evidence that both Thomas and James came from our family

Sorry for going on , but this is really fascinating !!

Cheers
