Have you tried the Access to Archives site:

http://www.a2a.org.uk/

Put the name you are interested in into the search box and see which catalogues come up.  You cannot view the records online, but most record offices are quite good at summarising the contents of the records and you might glean something from them, even if only a date.

What a good resource - thanks Nell.
Didn't find anything - they don't seem to have any records listed from Essex yet but will keep looking. Some interesting reading though.
I'm sure the Access to Archives would be useful for other researchers to look at.
