WHELLER/WHEELER/WELLER - Huish Episcopi
« on: Saturday 26 November 05 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have come to the proverbial brick wall and wonder if there is anyone who would be willing to help me?  I have a Walter Wheller ch 1797 who married twice firstly to unknown and Secondly to a Ruth Sweet in 26 Dec 1822.
Walter had a daughter called Martha (ch 30 May 1824 Huish Episcopi) who married Henry Thorne 15 Mar 1869 at Huish Episcopi .
Martha had quite a few illigitimate children before she married Henry Thorne.  One being a Ruth Wheller born 1840 Huish Episcopi, I would like to find out who the others were.  Also who was William Wheller born 1851?  Was he Martha's brother?
The same names seem to appear through the Centuries, Walter, William and Athaliah.  I have two Athaliah Whellers one ch 8 Jul 1828 and another born 30 Jul 1820, can anyone confirm who their parents where?  Regards Polly

Hi Pollyd,

Right I  have found Walter and Ruth on the 1841 but its a bit confusing as there are 2 children called Winifred?? The entry covered 2 pages so can only think ther enumerater got confused. But the 1841 doesn't give relationships so the other one could be a relative.

Walter Wheeler  40  Miller  y
Ruth    Wheeler  35            y
Winifred    "          9            y
Winifred    "          6            y
Anna         "          4            y
William      "          1            y

living in Huish Episcopi, Somerset.

There was no baby Ruth born 1840?? on the 1841

In 1851 Walter was a widow and daughter Martha living with him

Walter Weller  53  head              b. Huish Episopi
Martha    "        26  dau               b. Petney/Pitney
William    "        12   son              b.  Petney/Pitney
James      "         8   son               b. Huish Episcopi
Mary        "         8   gdau             b. Huish Episcopi
Lodney/Sidney   5   gson             b.   "           "
Norbert/ Mabel   1mt  gdau          b.   "           "

Again living in Huish Episcopi.

Having trouble finding any of them in 1861 but will keep looking will post this for now.

Hope this helps to sort them out somebit.

Angela

Athaliah Wheller m. George Crossman, Jun Q 1846.  (Langport 10 691)

Their name is transcribed as Crosman, Crossman and Cropman.  (Old-fashioned "ss" looks like "p".)  Do you need census entries for their family?

Wheller family in 1871:
RG10/2397/7/5 - Huish Episcopi
William Wheller  Head  32  Miller  b. Huish Episcopi
Fanny Wheller  Wife  32  Miller's Wife  b. Shapwick
Alfred E Wheller  Son  1  b. Huish Episcopi
Walter Wheller  Father  73  Miller  b. Huish Episcopi
Herbert Wheller  Nephew  10  b. Huish Episcopi

Hi Pollyd,

There are three 'Sweet' marriages in Pitney between 26/12/1822 and 03/05/1823, Ruth Sweet's marriage to Walter Wheller being the first. The last was Samuel Sweet's marriage to Mary Ann Petty. I am assuming that these three Sweets are related. I am descended from Samuel. My question therefore is: Have you found any information on the parents of Ruth Sweet?

Thanks.

Regards,

Grahame.

Re the two Winfords, one was Ruths son born 1832 and the other was Ruths grandson born 1845 to daughter Martha.  The Ruth born 1840 died 1843. After the older Ruth died, Walter lived with daughter Martha. After Martha married Henry Thorne, Walter lived with son William and his family.

I don't know if this will help you but you could get in touch with Valerie Sweet through Weston FHS & see if she is researching her name in that parish - it's only a long shot but may pay off

All the very best
