Hello Annie:

Sorry I didn't tell you sooner!!!  I figured that he must have had a reason for changing it such as being a deserter under the name McLernon or perhaps he was ashamed of being in the rebel forces. That is why my search has concentrated on William J. They seem to have been inseparable. Note George was using both names as late as 1872, maybe until 1929 when when he died.

Hello Annie:

This could be him as the age is only two years out. George was born May 12th, 1844. If it is him it raises the question; why does his pension only take into account his post war service? Unless of course he was also collecting a pension that we don't know about under McLernon too. From his record it is clear that there was more than a little larceny in him!

I am working with a genealogist in Antrim to obtain George's birth certificate or baptismal certificate to see if he has a middle name. If he does I've not seen him using it elsewhere.

I believe the reason behind the name change is the key. The only thing that makes sense is if he was using McLernon during the Civil War and he doesn't want the post war U.S. Army to know. He deserted from the U.S. Pawnee in his post war USMC service so maybe he was a war time deserter too--- speculation( this stuff is addictive).

In his obit it tells of him witnessing a famous action of the famous C.S.S. Alabama. The Alabama was sunk in 1864 off the coast of France so if true he might have been in either Navy as the Alabama never returned to the U.S. after it first departed the U.S.

As you can see I have a mystery on my hands. I would dearly love to solve it in George's favour.

Also note that any spelling of McLernon that sounds like it MAY be valid such as McClernon, McClernan, McLarnan, McClearnon etc. It is an Irish(Gaelic) name that means Mc or Mac  'son of', giolla 'follower of' St. Earnon. It has been 'anglicized .

Thanks for your help. If you have any ideas I would be glad to hear them.

(P.S. any thoughts or ideas on WJ's Declaration of Intent papers in NY county court?)

Regards

McLernon/McClellan

The only other thing I can think of with George is - that he was in the BRITISH army - that's why we can't find passenger lists - and he deserted from the British army and then joined the American Army or Navy - whichever the case may be!! and thats how he got to stay!! He wouldn't be the first to do that ..... !

As to the papers - I'm not sure - but check the New York archives - I gave you the site earlier!

http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ should have the addresses you need for those NY petitions.

Also, if George served in the Civil War he may have taken advantage of the special terms involving naturalizations for such soldiers, so be sure and read the MILITARY section at NaturalizationRecords.com to find out how to find those records.

You say you found census records for the family -- You can use census records to help you find immigration and
naturalization years for an ancestor.

The 1900, 1910 ,1920 and 1930 census identify citizenship
status, with notations showing the individual was an Alien,
or had started the Naturalization process or had his final
papers. The year of immigration is also shown. 1920 also
nicely provides a year of naturalization.

There are great clues in the 1870 census too!
If your ancestor has a check mark in the  column "Male
Citizens of the
United States of twenty-one years of age and upwards"  you
have a clue that naturalization took place before 1870 :-)

To find out what questions were asked on various census
records see http://allcensusrecords.com/

As for passenger lists, all, except NY port, are indexed and on microfilm for the time period you want. You can get a list of film numbers (NARA & FHC) at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml

Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link,
then find the film # you need, then decide whether to order
it in to a nearby FHC or have NARA do a lookup.

The staff of the National Archives will undertake a search
of the original records for a fee.

To find your nearest FHC you can go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

To search NY, use Steve Morse's ONE STEP search engines at http://www.stevemorse.org/

Good luck!

Hello Eillo and Annie:

I have the 1910 Census Showing William J McLernon my great grand father's older brother. I need some help in interpreting column 30 'Whether a Survivor of Union or Confederate Army or Navy'.

For WJ there is a number six(6) in this column and for the rest(wife and children) there are the following numbers two(2), zero(0) and eight(8).

Can you tell me what this means?

Thanks

McLernon
