Birkett/Cragg
« on: Tuesday 29 November 05 18:28 GMT (UK) »
Contact from a fellow researcher of Cragg family left me wondering if anyone on here could help us make a connection between the Birkett and Cragg surnames?
I have a Birkett Robert Cragg (sometimes listed as Robert Birkett) born Broken Brow Preston Richard in 1840 (Birkett has also been used as an extra or first christian name in later generations) leading us to think there must somewhere be a relevant Birkett/Cragg marriage, possibly Haversham/Crossthwaite or Halecat and Beetham might be included.
Many thanks

It looks as if it's an old connection:  IGI has the marriage of Edward Cragg and Mary Birkett on 10 Sep 1769 in Kendal.  Their son Birkett Cragg was christened on 20 Jan 1777, Preston Patrick.

To confuse matters further, Birkett Cragg married Mary Birkett in Crook on 13 Jul 1816.

Interesting bit on the Edward Cragg and Mary Birkett marriage in Kendal.  My Birkett Cragg Dawson (1812 - Kendal) was the son of John Dawson (1775 -  Beetham) and Elizabeth Cragg (c. 1779 - Heversham or Beetham).  Is there a naming pattern using surnames?
