Samuel Reid Born in Ireland around 1847.
His parents were John Reid & Jane McNeice
samuel marrried in Glasgow to a Grace McCredie in 1869
Died Glasgow 1911.
Where is the best place to start looking since I have  absolutely no idea whether he was from Eire or Northern Ireland..

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks wini

Hi,
Both names are Northern Ireland, which makes sense if the family ended up in Glasgow.
I had a quick look on the Familysearch.org site (IGI), but couldn't find this particular Reid you're after - but you may find some names that ring bells somewhere.
I don't know anything about northern Ireland records, my research is in the south, but the PRONI site may start you off, public records office of N.Ireland.

Cheers

Hi Wini,

There were several guys in Belfast (Shankill) named John Reid between 1848 - 1864. This was the time when Griffiths Valuation of Ireland was conducted. The valuation in Belfast was conducted in 1861 - 62 You could find families by the names of Reid and McNeice living during the time of the Valuation in four parishes in Ireland - Antrum, Belfast city, Down and Monaghan.

Wini:
Here is a link to the Reid listings in Ros Davies' County Down site. As Christopher said, there were many Reids in Down and Antrim.
If I come across anything, I will let you know.
Good luck,

Wini:
Who knows, although I am not sure if there were any Samuels in my line. My great-grandfather was Robert Reid, a tailor in Rathfriland who married Margaret Anne Mulholland in 1867. He had two sons, John and my grandfather, Joe. Robert's father was John Reid but I have not been able to get much info beyond that. Looks like Samuel and Robert would have been around the same age! Brothers?  Who knows.  We should keep in touch so we can exchange info just in case...........

Pat

Well caught there Pat. Have you considered playing cricket for the Gentlemen of Ireland? I did a Google there hard on the heels of that statement hoping to find an Irish cricketer called Reid. I had no success in that quarter although there are several Irish sporting personalities bearing the surname. www.hindu.com/thehindu/2001/08/14/stories/07140286.htm
Wini, I offer two of those personalities. One of them comes from Dromore, not too far from Rathfriland, and the other is a Rubgy enthusiast.

Here is a mention of the man from Dromore
