Durkin and Ellicott - Help please!
« on: Monday 06 September 04 17:31 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone else who has an interest in DURKIN and
ELLICOTT? variants ELLIGOT-ILCOAT-ILLICOTE
I gave up on this branch of my family quite a while ago
as Icould'nt seem to get any further with them and I feel
such a traitor. They are dear to me,its the only Irish line
I have and especially because they were rag-bone
gatherers, the most interesting occupation of any in my
family tree.My father said they came from Mayo, aunt
said Sligo(wonderful). James Durkin wife Mary(Ellicott)came to England between1849-1853 with their daug.Mary
b.1849 Ire. and settled in Dudley Worcs.

Hi Jacquelineve

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

I have just started looking into my family history. My mother's family came from Ballina Co Mayo and were called Durkan or another spelling (noone left alive to confirm). I wondered if you had any more info about your relatives ? Caroline

Hello Caroline

I hope you have better luck with your Durkins(Durkans)
than I'm having with mine.
All that I can add, is that they had twins James - Bridget
born 1855 Dudley. and that the "D" surname is more common
in Mayo and Sligo.

                      Good Luck
                  Jacqueline,

Re Ellicott......there were Ellicotts in Westport, Co Mayo until the middle of the 20thC. Not sure if there are any descendents left. They had a pub on Quay rd Westport. There were also Ellicotts in Newport, about 7 miles from Westport

Thank you for the info, everything helps!!

Have got a little further with my research... James Durkin + Mary Elligott(variations) were married at Burriscarra Mayo

                        in 1846.
