Hi Jill,

If you want to look for Augustine in Waterford, you need to have a better idea of the townland. Can you look for his marriage certificate? It looks like he was married in England. This will give his father's name and possibly an Irish address either of which would help the search.

Regards

Kate

Many thanks to everyone who has replied to my plea.
The biggest problem I am having is that Dorney is transcribed in many different ways, so although I know them to be alive at certain times I can't find them.
Augustine b. abt 1838 married Ellen Spence. She was born abt 1848 in Portsmouth. I can't find a marriage for them but their first child was also born there.
I have collected birth certificates for Bernard, Isabel and Eveline but can't find them in 1891 census.
I found Bernard in 1891 census as Downey in lodgings in Liverpool.
Ellen Spence/Dorney died in Liverpool in 1889 and her husband was still alive then according to her death certificate.
Please keep looking

UPDATE
After almost giving up on tracing the Dorneys in Waterford I have managed to find a baptism for Augustine dorney on the Waterford Heritage website. as this was the only baptism for an Augustine I think I may have hit the jackpot.
Date of baptism - 16 October 1837
Parish - Trinity Within (Cathedral)
Father - Edmund
Mother - Eleanor Britt
Sponsors - Patrick O'Connor and Bridget Darcy

Only problem - On his marriage certificate fathers name is  given as Edward!!

I am posting this update in the hope that someone could tell me if this could be an error in transcription or may recognise the names of his mother or sponsors.

Eternally hopeful, Jill

I've seen Edmond and Edward as interchangeable.

The two are also both very similar looking in Latin, which is often used in RC records - Eadmundus and Eadwardus

Thank you Shane I was hoping that was the case.

I know there were several Dorneys in the area but the Edmund and Eleanor threw me
.
On Augustines' marriage certificate in 1861 fathers name was Edward Dorney (deceased) a draper.
Slaters directory 1856 has an Edward Dorney as a clothes dealer.
1877 Waterford Almanack and Directory has Ellen Dorney, clothes dealer at 17 Patrick St.(Edward would presumably be dead)
1894 Egan Directory had E Dorney - haberdasher.
I feel sure these were the parents

I now need to find out if Eleanor and Ellen are the same person and if there is anyone searching for the Britt family. I would also love to know if there were any other children.

Is this possibly Ellen Britt Dorney ?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Waterford_No__1_Urban/Patrick_Street/1760975/

Still at Patrick Street, Waterford.

If so then it says that she was originally born in County Tipperary.

If you think so then Anne Manahan is Anne Britt sister to your Augustine. Note Anne (Britt's) second son is called Edward - usually a tradition to name the second son after the wife's father. Another son is also a draper (which you said was the family occupation at one point).
