1631 muster roll of Londonderry lookup?
« on: Thursday 29 December 05 02:24 GMT (UK) »
Some time ago I paid for some research and got the following Kincaids in the 1631 Muster rolls for Londonderry/Derry:

John Kinkead - sword only;
Andrew Kinkead - sword only;
Daniel Kinkead - sword & naphance;
and John Kinkead with no weapons.

This was nice but the real meat is missing (ie. who they were under and thus possibly what manor they were from).

Does anyone have access to the 1631 muster rolls for Londonderry/Derry?  If so, would they kindly check them for the above for the additional information?

Many thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply!  I was aware of the link you noted and the partial transcription of the 1631 muster rolls given as a link there.

My reason for the post is that the Kincaids I noted are elsewhere in the muster roll and not in that part only trasncribed.  I want to learn who they were under as this is important information.

My understanding is that the muster roll has not been microfilmed and is not part of the LDS library.  Thus, I was wondering if someone has access to it at PRONI.

Thanks again!

Peter,

Are you sure that these Kinkeads were in the
1630/31 muster roll as I have a copy for county
Derry and there are no Kinkeads in my copy??

I had an update last year on this which raised questions about the original research I received.

Last year, Len Swindley of Australia forwarded to me the 1631 Muster Rolls for Donagheady and Leckpatrick parishes as given in John N. Gebbie's Ardstraw (Newtownstewart): Historical Survey of a Parish 1600 1900 (Omagh: Strule Press, 1968).  Under the Master of Strabane were listed John Kinkeard (sword only), Andrew Kinkeard (sword only), Daniel Kinkeard (sword and snaphance), and John Kinkead (no armes).  This is clearly not Londonderry Kincaids but Tyrone Kincaids.

The Summonister Rolls for Tyrone clearly have a Andrew and John Kinkead, gentlemen, in the 1631 timeframe.  I am not sure whether to interpret the Kinkeards as Kinkeads or Kincairds.  However, at least two should be the Andrew and John Kinkead of the Summonister Rolls.
