Angus Campbell/Catherine Matheson COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 29 December 05 03:41 GMT (UK) »
Can somebody help please. I'm new to Scottish research and feel I'm going around in circles.
Ive been looking for a marriage record for Angus Campbell to Catherine nee Matheson. Not sure of the year My great grandmother (their daughter) was born 9 May 1869 Balchladich Stoer. Have no idea whether she was first born or not or whether she had other siblings.
I found a marriage record for Angus Campbell and an Ann Matheson at Stoer 23 Feb 1856. Is it possible for Ann on her marriage cert to then be Catherine on her daughters birth cert?

Any help most appreciated

Stop looking folks. :)
Ive just discovered the original birth certificate online for great grandma and she was born Catherine Matheson not Campbell. She was the illegitimate daughter of Catherine Matheson and Angus Campbell. So no marriage of these two, but their appears to have been some paternity suit against Angus Campbell as Catherine's name changed to Campbell at some stage.
Somebody wouldn't know where Id find out this info by any chance.

Thanks

I wonder if we have a family connection.
My great great grandfather was Angus Cambell who was born in Sutherland and died in England in 1882 aged about 65.
He was at some time a soldier because my great grandmother Barbara Ann Campbell  was born around 1840 in Strirling castle where he was based. I found the census records for Stoer and thought there might be some connection. Can you help in any way.

My Angus Campbell was a Seaman  so would doubt very much that there would be any connection from that point alone.
Other than that I know nothing else about my Angus. Sorry cant be of any help.

Regards

Did the mother  go on to marry Angus Macintyre and also have some illegitimate children herself. I have a branch where several macintyres use mothers maiden name her married name or the new partners name alternately .on different records .
In Cambeltown mostly but some emigrated .
Sorry just seen this post is completed

Unfortunately, in the 1980s the advice of the Scottish Record Office was to destroy all records of "Affiliation and Aliment" cases that were over 100 years old. Back then the court records were all in paper form only and took up a huge amount of space. It was further assumed that there was no realistic method by which anyone could undertake a search for a particular case except by wading through dozens of boxes of records that generally stank of pigeon waste.

Nobody back then could even conceive that 30 or so years later the whole lot could be copied and indexed by name on something smaller than a human finger.

I personally threw out sack upon sack of court records, about 10% would have been retained had anyone predicted the development of the Internet. With hindsight I'm not proud, but the notion that there would soon be an easy way to locate a paternity case in Wick or Banff with a few clicks of a mouse was not even a possibility.
