Possible Armagh Burials
« on: Friday 23 December 05 19:46 GMT (UK) »
::) I have information that my family may have come from Armagh County, Ireland. The name is Slater (at least it was in the Canada) but could have been spelled Slator. I am specifically looking for information on Thomas Slater, who may have had brothers, Andrew, John and James. Wondering if they left family behind that may have been buried in Armagh. Any info would be gratefully appreciated!

Irene:
Here is a link that might be helpful. http://irishgenealogy.ie
Click on Ireland Gravestone Index and then enter McArdle and Armagh. You should get a listing showing first name, cemetery and year. There is no cost unless you want to purchase a copy of Inscription.

Good luck,

Joy:
Using the same site I find this for Slator:
http://irishgenealogy.ie

ELLEN   SLATOR   1908    KEADY   ARMAGH
JAMES   SLATOR   1909    KEADY   ARMAGH
JANE   SLATOR   1877    KEADY   ARMAGH
MAGGIE   SLATOR   1869    KEADY   ARMAGH
ROBERT   SLATOR   UNKNOWN    TYNAN   ARMAGH
SAMUEL   SLATOR   1905    KEADY   ARMAGH
SARAH   SLATOR   1874    KEADY   ARMAGH
SARAH   SLATOR   1894    KEADY   ARMAGH

Using Slater:
JAMES   SLATER   1904    KEADY   ARMAGH
JOHN   SLATER   1902    KEADY   ARMAGH

It would seem that Keady might be the place to focus on.

This might be a useful resource.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donaghmore1/armagh/armagh1.html

And Joy, I see that you are in Boston. Lucky you, Boston College has extensive Irish records.  http://www.bc.edu/centers/irish/studies/

That should keep you busy for a while, I think. Good luck and let us know how things progress.

Hello Joy,

There's a site called Emerald Ancestors that might be worth a look. It's a subscription site but seems to be good value for a month although you can subscribe for a year if you wish. Do a "search rootschat" for the site to see the comments and also go to a site called Belfast Forum and see the comments there before making any decisions.

Hello Joy,
My mother was a SLEATOR, b 1904 in Belfast. Her grandfather was a William James SLATER. He joined the RIC in 1867, aged 23, and the application form states he was born in Armagh. He was a servant. He was recommended by Thos. SIMPSON J.P. who lived in the townland of Ballyard. This is south of the city of Armagh on the road to Keady. I understand the person making the recommendation had to know the applicant personally, so it is possible that William may have worked for Simpson. I believe, but have no proof, that William's parents were James SLATER and Margaret HALL. Do you recognise any of this?

Hello Sarah,

Many thanks. I appreciate that it is a long time since her request, and anything could have happened in the meantime. I will just have to sit and wait and hope someone else has the same interest!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and everyone else on Rootschat.

Regards,

David in Newtownards
