Cleaning a gravestone
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 14:53 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how I should clean a white marble headstone please? It is only 17 years old but is looking a bit uncared for. It's only top dirt but is going a tad grey, and I don't want to ruin it with Cif or the like.
Many thanks and Happy New Year to all.
Ann. ::)

Hi Ann,

if you click on the search button and enter cleaning gravestones you will find several topics on this subject.

Two big ones, well worth reading are:

Topic: Cleaning up gravestones
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,83504.0.html

and
Topic: Re Cleaning Gravestones !!
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,75887.0.html

There are also others.  If you still have questions after reading these, add them to one of those topics.

Good luck,
Bob

Thank you very much for replying to my query. After reading the links you posted I think I'll leave it alone. As I said---it's not very old and I can read the inscription very well. It's only the top that is dirty so I'll use plain water and if that doesn't work I'll leave it be.
Many thanks.
Ann.
ps. I have found when I am trying to decipher very old inscriptions that a spray with water works well and enables you to take a good photo.

I use washing up liquid and a dish cloth and a bottle of clean water to rinse it off. This was how I was told to do it by are local memorial mason.
