Missing in 1851 - where are Jane Bainbridge and Featherstone Hodgson?
« on: Wednesday 04 January 06 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Happy New Year.

I can't find two important links of my family in 1851.

Jane Bainbridge is the mother of Featherstone Bainbridge (born 1838), Featherston Hodgson is recorded as father on his birth certificate.  However I can't find either of them on the 1851 census.

Featherstone Bainbridge is living with his grandparents, Mary and Christopher Bainbridge.  I guess Jane probably married proir to the 1851 but I can't find a record for that either.  According to IGI she was born in 1820 so she would have been about 30 at them time of the census.

There seems to be only one Featherstone Hodgson on the 1851 census, he was born in 1840, 2 years after Featherstone Bainbridge was born so evidently this is not my man.  Obviously he may have died, emigrated, or maybe didn't exist and Jane made up his name for the birth certificate.

Any ideas where they could be hiding?

Thank you
Love

Hi

I have found this in the 1851. The image is quite poor so I will do my best to read it.

Featherston Hodgson, head, marr, age 36, coal miner born Stanhope Durham
Joseph Hodgson, son, age 14,  ???, born Stanhope Durham
Jane Hodgson, daugh, age 9, scholar born South Moor Durham

+ two lodgers

Black Prince Cottages
Civil parish of Wolsingham
Durham

HO107 2388
folio 457 page 29

Now I am sure that Feathston is listed as married so I will look for a wife, could it be Jane Bainbridge he married, or would that be too straight forward!! His daughter is Jane though.

Hi Nicky,

Thank you for finding that, wonder why it didn't come up on my search of the 1851.  I'll go and have a look now.
I would love it it Featherstone had married Jane, I could do with a straight forward line here as the rest of it is definately not straight forward!!

Thanks again

Hi Emma,

Thank you for looking, the Dec Q birth is for Featherstone Bainbridge, he was registered as a Hodgson but as he was brought up by his grandparents he became a Bainbridge.  I have his birth certificate already, thats where I found out about his father as his marriage certificate states he is illigitimate, I'm guessing he never knew his father.

I guess either of the deathes you have found could be  my man, any idea how I can narrow it down?

Thanks again

Hope this does not complicate things............

Featherstones on 1841 Census.

F. Bainbridge aged 2 within Lanchester District.
F. Hodgin/Hodgson, 1, Lanchester.
F.Hodgson, 25, Lanchester
F.Hodgson, 20, Auckland District.

And many more Featherston/e names... they sure like that name in that neck of the words.

The above details are from >www.durhamrecordsonline.com< ,

which charges fees for detailed info, but allows a free search, returning name, age, birthplaces (from C1851 onwards) and census district.

Thank you Michael,

Ok, you've not confused things further!!

In regard to durham records online - I'm not sure if it is worth paying to look at these records as none will say 'Oh by the way this man is the missing father of FB' or anything to indicate this will it....hmmmm where do I go now?  Do you know what further details it will give if I were to pay to view?

Process of elimination....

Featherstone Bainbridge is my great great great granddad.
F H aged 1 is the only one I found on the 1851 census, no connection to me
The other 2 F H's are both possible fathers for my F Bainbridge, both are old enough, one must be the guy Nicky found on the 1851, will have to cross reference ages - the 25 yr old one must be this one.
So does that mean that the 20 year old one is the on Emma found a death record for in 1844?

I think I may have probably confused things now!

Anyway having typed out all that I have still no idea which one is my Featherstone's father....

Yep - I'm confused now!

Thank you all again

Legs,

If you paid you would get the normal Full Monty that is recorded on a Census.  There are also church records ( for some churches, available)

And there is a sale on at the moment  LOL
