Can anyone help the the marriage of William Burgess to Frances . . . probably in Ore, where their children were born, about 1818.

Thanks.

Are you sure it was Ore ?, the only marriage that comes up is in Lewes

Location: Lewes St. Anne, East Sussex,  Date: 27 Jun 1819:
Groom: William BURGESS
Bride: Frances SMITH of this parish
Married by calling of Banns.

Hi again

Do you mean these children; all in Ore Church

5th Dec 1819, William Burgess
7th July 1822, Mary Burgess
7th August 1825, Harriett Burgess
5th Oct 1828, Samuel
3rd Apr 1821, Samuel Burgess
2nd Feb 1834, Charlotte Burgess

All children of William & Frances, Labourer of St Mary-in-the-Castle parish.

They must have had relatives in Ore to keep returning to that chuch to have the children baptised.

For pictures of the Ore Church, please visit my web site at

Its under Hastings Archives.

Thanks Chris,

Yes, they are the children, but I wasn't convinced about that marriage . . . Lewes seemed a long way from Ore, so I checked the census records and discovered the family in Hollington in both 1851 & 1861.

William Burgess was born about 1787 in Westfield and Frances about 1789 in London.  They also had a son, John, born about 1818 in Westfield so it seems the marriage was before 1818.

I found one for a William Burgess on 23 Aug 1811 in Brede to Frances Stemp, which may be the right one, but I'd like to find a few more children born 1811-1817 to confirm it.

I guess I need the 1841 census for this.

Hi Shaz

No, the 1841 census is not yet on line.

But I understand that Ancestry.com are working on it and it should be on line sometime this year

Glad to have been of help to you

Hi there - I'm new to this forum, so have only just found your posting.
I'm descended from Frances Stemp's elder brother Joseph.
Frances did marry William Burgess in Brede.  Frances was baptised in St Andrew's Holborn, London on 21 March 1790.
Her parents, Samuel Stemp and Susanna Ireland were living in Eyre Street Clerkenwell with their first child, Joseph (my great great grandfather), when Frances was born.
They moved back to Hollington before the third child, Maria, was born.

Hi and welcome
If you click on Shazzam's name you will see they are also in Australia.  Not been on since 2011 though.  With luck, assuming their email address has not changed, they will get a notification of your reply.
