This is my first post so not sure what I am doing BUT:
My great great great grandfather was William Burgess (b1787).  I cannot find a record of either his birth in Westsfield 1787.  Also the same problem with his marriage to Frances Stemp (who I believe was born Frances Stamp), although I see the date in a lot of family trees as 23 August 1811.
Can anyone help with this please?
Regards
Ros

The marriage for William and Frances is on the Sussex Marriage Index and was in Brede on 23rd Aug 1811.  Frances is otp and William of Westfield.
Baptisms
Entry from Westfield St John the Baptist 1727 - 1799
   William       BURGESS
Sex     s    Baptism Date     25-Mar  1787

Father      William        BURGESS
Mother     Mary        BURGESS
but there is also another William son of John and Mary baptised November 12th 1786   so you will need to see if you can find other evidence to see which is which.
If you have lots of Sussex ancestors it is well worth joining the Sussex family History Group as they have online records for members.

Wow, thank you so much.  The William born 25 March 1787 is indeed "my" William.  Thank you also for the advice re Sussex Family History Society. Being so far away in Australia it is hard to get confirmation of some facts.
I did visit the Hollington/Westfield area in 2011 and was able to see the graveyard etc but of course no headstones as my ancestors seem to have been quite poor.  I was able to speak with someone who happened to be at the "Church in the Wood" who confirmed burial details for me.
Again, thank you for your prompt reply.
Cheers from Oz

There is a possible marriage for William Burgess to "Mercy" Noakes in Westfield on 13 Feb 1781.  I believe Mary and Mercy can be interchangeable at times so worth a look.
