Simpson Family in Morland
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
I have just found a definite family link to the village of Morland in Westmorland.
I am looking for people linked to Abraham Simpson (of which there seems to be 3 or 4 generations) and also a Joseph Simpson (his father).

My Abraham Simpson is found in 1851 in Carlisle but the census gives his birth place as Morland. He would have been born around 1820 ish.

Anyone with any links or info would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

Dear Anna,
I do not know if this will help or not.
When searching for my Richardsons around Morland I came across this entry in the Parish Transcripts Baptisms 1743 - 1812 page 105.
June 10th 1804
Nathaniel son of Thomas Richardson Sleagill - Farmer and Agnes his wife (LATE SIMPSON) age 4 months when christened.

Another entry as above but on 26th April 1807 for daughter Agnes.

Morland was the Parish for quite a few small villages like Reagill, Sleagill & Newby in the immediate area.

This entry in fact did not relate to my ancestors. This Thomas Richardson's father was Nathaniel.

Have you looked in the 1787 Constables for Westmorland. Although no information on the people they do contain names which could relate to your Simpsons as there are quite a few there.

Good hunting

Judy

Hi Anna,

Just thought of another good site for Westmorland
http://www.northofthesands.org.uk
They have quite a few names in Churchyards inscriptions where you may find some Simpsons.

I can now confirm that Abrahams father was Joseph Simpson (got his wedding certificate the other day) - still the Morland area though

Hi Anna,
Are you still researching the Simpson family of Morland?

I know there was an Agnes Simpson who married a Thomas Richardson. I am very interested to know if you have traced anything further back  on Thomas Richardson.

I dont know if there are any connections and I'm doubtful there probably are, but living in hope if nothing else, I have a Rachel Simpson born about 1776 (the date varies wildly) in Sowerby which is about the same distance north of Penrith as Morland is to the south.

She is the daughter of a John Simpson and Agnes Shepherd, John may have been a schoolmaster, but I can't read Rachels Death certificate very well to be certain, she died in Balmaghie Kirkcudbright in 1871

John Simpson and Agnes Shepherd may also be the same couple who had 3 children in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland

Joseph 1778
Mary    1780
George 1783

but other than these tantalising glimpses I can't find any other record of any of them

anything on John Simpson or any of the rest of them gratefully received

more info on the scottish end of this is discussed at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,509370.0.html
