Criggy, :D

the name Nancy came to be a diminutive of Ann, but may have originally evolved from a medieval form of Agnes -

from Adrian Room's book Brewer's names.

When we registered my daughter's birth three years ago, we had to spell everything out, then when she had finished typing it, she turned her computer screen round for us to check it, then once she'd printed it, we had to check it again before we signed it.  She actually said that she could change any details at any time, right up until we signed it.  So hopefully nowadays it "shouldn't" happen as often as it did.

Stupid woman!!!  Our one done our copy first then wrote it in the book.  I only remember because it was my "first outing" and I wasn't feeling too good, so I just wanted to go home, but she took absolutely ages writing it in the book and I had the certificate in my hand.

my nan had to go to court and make a Statutory declaration because on her birth certificate she was Mildred Ellen Cornish but when she married it got put down as Mildred Emily believe it or not this happened twice as she was married twice!!

I've got a birth certificate with an "official correction" done 10 weeks after the registration.   It acknowledges that the year on the certificate was wrong and is signed by the Registrar in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar.

I also have a lady, born Hannah Maria, christened Ann Marie, employed as Maria, in a census as Hannah Marie, and buried as Annie Maria!   Having sorted all that lot out her ancestry goes back to 1314!

Criggy,

Re Nancy, Ann and Agnes - Agnes was a popular name in medieval times pronounced and sometimes written as "Annis", which makes it easier to understand how it became Nancy.

Thanks for that interesting snippet Nell. Will bear that in mind.

I also have a Hannah Maria who was sometimes Anna Maria and an Ann who was known as Annie, Elizabeths who are Betsy or Betty and sometimes Eliza and a Sally who was down as Sarah in one census. Gets a bit confusing at times.

And then there are those who swap christian names using their second names or even nicknames!

Who said family history was dull?
