ELLWOOD Family of Dufton & Brough/u/Stainmore
« on: Monday 30 January 06 13:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Has any one any information about the following family:

Mark Ellwood bap 25/4/1734 Dufton married Anne Loadman 8/6/1756 Brough/u/Stainmore.

Their children were:

Margaret bap 9/5/1758 Dufton, unmarried in 1787,
Agnes bap 20/9/1759 Dufton,
Mary bap 1761 Dufton,
Mark bap 19/4/1764 Dufton,
Thomas bap 27/5/1766 Brough/u/stainmore
Michael bap 29/4/1770 B/U/S
John bap 11/9/1768 B/U/S
William bap 20/9/1772 Dufton.

Michael I think married Mary Atkinson 7/12/1795 St Michael's Appleby & for a second time Hannah Robinson 3/9/1839 also St Michael's. Michael was a butcher & is in the 1829 directory.

William I think married Anne Simpson 27/4/1794 St Michael's Appleby. William was a farmer, but don't know where.

Is anyone else researching this family? I would be very grateful for any extra information.

Regards,

Gillian

Hi
I have a copy of Appleby at Work - a list of directory entries.  For Ellwood it has:
John jnr blacksmith Crackenthorpe 1858
John, bootmaker Long Marton 1884,
John, farmer Crackenthorpe 1811,
John, Publican, Crown and Cushion 1904-5
Thomas joiner 1778 , wheelwright (No entry under it)
Thomas Parker Ellwood, farmer, Hilton Mill 1884-5
Thomas Parker    "     miller Hilton Mill 1884-5
William, bootmaker Bongate 1884-5, 13 Bongate 1905

You might be able to claim some of them.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the reply.

Thomas Parker Ellwood is definately one of my Ellwoods. He is the brother of my gg grandmother Isabella Ellwood. They were both born at Blasterfield Farm Crosby Ravensworth, children of John Ellwood & Margaret Parker. I'm not too sure about the others. My Ellwoods were mainly farmers.

Strange that Michael Ellwood the butcher of Bongate is not listed!!

Thanks again,

Gillian

I noticed some Parkers too.   Do you want those?  I shall be in that area next week if you want photos.

Hi Andrea,

I would love a photo of Hilton Mill, thanks very much!

My Parkers lived in Soulby but beforehand must have been in Warcop as Margaret Parker was baptised there in 1817.

Hi
I was not very successful with pictures of Hilton Mill as it seems to have gone!   It is marked clearly on the map but when you get there there is a modern house called Mill Corner with a mill stone built into the front wall, an older farm behind it and a bit further along the road some cottages called Mill cottages - but not the original mill as far as we could see.  It is possible one house is built on the site or an older bit has been extended.   I did take some photos so send me a personal message with your email address and I will let you have them.  It was quite surprising that the mill shown on the map is not actually on the river either.
A lovely village though.

Hi,
Was your Margaret Parker married twice as I have a Margaret Parker in my tree born1817 married to Septimus Richardson from Morland. They had a son Septimus Parker. The father died 1838 in the year the son was born then the son died 1859 at Kendal. She married again fairly quickly and I think that was to an Ellwood.

Septimus is living with his Parker grandparents in 1851 Census.

Hi Jeffrey,

Yes Margaret Parker did marry twice, firstly to Septimus Richardson and then John Ellwood in 1840 Kirkby Stephen. I have lots of info about them if you are interested. Young Septimus, son of Margaret died aged about 20ish. I have his funeral card.

What are your interests in Margaret Parker? Margaret and John Ellwood are my ggg grandparents.

Hi Gillian,

We have corresponded before and you were kind enough to send me a copy of Septimus's funeral card - didn't realise it was you when I responded. I love the funeral card it makes me feel really sad he died so young!
