"tertius"
« on: Monday 30 January 06 17:42 GMT (UK) »
I have found a "William Murray tertius" in the Stirlingshire OPRs for 1783. Can anyone tell me if William senior and junior would definitely have been William tertius's father and grandfather or could the tertius be to distinguish him from other relatives- a cousin and uncle for example?.

Welcome to RootsChat, Max.

Tertius means the third - in this case, the third one of the name.  Presumably William Murray senior/the elder was father of  William Murray junior/the younger and both were still alive when William Murray tertius was old enough to be recognised as an adult as well!  I would imagine it is a reasonable guess that William Murray tertius was the son of junior, grandson of senior.

Thanks for that, although it's not what I was hoping to hear, as I had concluded that William's parents were John and Christian-going by the child naming order and there being a John and Christian Murray who had a son William.I guess it's back to the drawing board! Every Murray family had a William in it. :(
