mariage index look up
« on: Monday 30 January 06 22:25 GMT (UK) »
Could somebody please check for Edward Crunden / Mary Verrell  in 1888  at Eastbourne(poss. St Mary) and would this say much about Mary. My problem stems from there being two Mary's about 3 years apart in Eastbourne , one from Samuel and Mary , the other from John and Ann
          Thanks Richard

Hello Richard,

I have just checked the GRO Marriage Index for 1888 and afraid I can't find either an Edward Crunden or Mary Verrell, (including Verrall and Verrill) listed anywhere.

I did find a Mary Verrall for Dec 1889 Brighton 2b 416 but no corresponding Edward.

Having just ploughed through thirty years worth looking for something for myself, I haven't had a chance to go a few years either way for Mary and Edward.

Regards,
Phil

ok  Phil,  who wants to shoot me first, sometimes after a couple of hours I'll swear I go number blind , the date should read 1788, my apologies , I feel dreadful, knowing what it's like chewing through the GRO, mind numbing sometimes.

Thanks Suey, it's the 15 July 1888 one I'm after , the Crunding is a concern, I had earmarked Crunden for that, but Mary Verrall fits the bill.
My problem still remains that there are the two Mary Verralls in the frame both from Eastbourne Verrall families with about 4 years difference in ages. I was hoping this marriage might give me a clue. Just out of curiosity what does the "botp (B)  mean?  Thanks for your help
                              Richard.

Hi Richard - I would'nt worry too much about the spelling of Crunden and Crunding, we have had several discussions regarding this subject on Rootschat.  I'd say he's the chap you are looking for.

botp = both of this parish
(B) = married after Banns

Did'nt have time to cross check this morning, here is the other Mary

Mary Verrall otp (of this parish) married William Henty, Jevington (B) on 13th April 1788 at Eastbourne.

and another but later
Mary Verrall otp married John Vernon, Banstead Sy (B) on 12th October 1790 at Eastbourne.

There are another three Mary Virrell/Verall marriages in E/bourne but later - 1809, 1810, and 1818.
Let me know if you want details ...

Hi Suey
thanks again for that , the Crunden / Verrall is the one (15  july 1888)  not the Verrall 13 Apr 1888 wedding.  My problem is  which Mary Verrall is which. One is daughter of Samuel/ Mary and the other daughter of John and Ann, but which is which?  I had hoped the Index might give a clue and lead me further back down this maternal line

Hi Richard,
Just been doing a little digging with the SMI & IGI & I know the following is pretty flimsy but...
It's possible the two Mary Verrall's are cousins.  Mary cr. 1770 d/o samuel & Mary & Mary Verrall d/o John & Ann cr. 1767.  I tried to find evidence that Samuel & John were brothers but failed. I found that Samuel is very likely the s/o Cephas & Mary Verrall nee Mockford married 1734 Ringmer, he was from Rottingdean & Mary from Ringmer but didn't find evidence of John as a son but we all know the IGI is not complete!
The children of Edward Crunden & Mary Verrall include a son, Samuel....possibly named after Mary's father?
Of the marriage of the other Mary Verrall to William Henty, I can find no children.
Noticed that the entries for the Verrall's & Crunden children are all LDS member submitted, so beware.
In conclusion, I would explore both Mary Verrall's & keep everything open until such time as some information comes along that proves or disproves a theory  :)

Good luck,

Jane
