Regans of Mayo
« on: Friday 03 February 06 19:57 GMT (UK) »
I have the death certificates of my great great granddad and great great grandmother who came to Southport in Lancs, UK, in the nineteenth century. They lived in a part of the town known as ‘Little Ireland’ and were called James and Sarah Regan. He died in 1878 she is 1898. He was 69 when he died she was 84.

We don’t know when they came to the UK but presume it was at the time of the potato famine.

We are told that they came from ‘County Mayo’ yet that’s all we know. Any information on the Regans of Mayo, Regans that moved to Southport from that region etc would be very fascinating.

She was formerly known as 'Sarah Kerrigan' - both born about 1811.

We believe they were Catholic.

Thanks

Hi Runicman

A warm welcome to RootsChat!  ;)

Have you had a look at all the usual general resources I tend to suggest?  ;)

You could also look at these Mayo specific sites which may help.

Perhaps you would like to have a look at these resources to see if there is anything that might help you.

Please come back with any further queries or to let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi Runciman

I have today come across your posting from a long time ago about Regans /Kerrigans of Little Ireland, Southport.  I have all the St. Marie's church records.  St. Marie's is where all the Irish immigrants went.

If you need any information  let me know.

Thanks Sandgrounder - that sounds interesting. I know that my great grandad was married at that church.

Great Grandad 'Mark' married Ellan Wilkinson at St Maries in 1870. Mark's dad was James Regan, Ellen's dad was William Wilkinson.
James I think was from Mayo and Married to Sarah who witnesses the wedding.

We need to trace back to James and Sarah Regan (our graeat great GPs ) and before.

James died in 1878 30 December aged 69 of bronchitis. Sarah was there when he died at Little Ireland.  He was a licenced hawker for trade.

Sarah died aged 84 of senile decay in 1898, 27 March again at Little Ireland. Ellen was present.

Sarah was from Connaught in Eire born about 1806.

Hi runicman,
a belated welcome to rootschat. :)
do you have your family in the censuses? I think it's them who are in Preston in 1851 and they have a child Patrick with them who was born in Chester. Is this your family? So they would have arrived in Southport via Preston and Chester.
This would tell you that they arrived sometime between Mary 1841/43 and Patrick 1847. I know it doesn't help with Mayo origins though.
best wishes

Sorry for that  :( - there are lots of simliarities:
I thought it was them as they are James and Sally (Sarah) , Bridget, Mary, Mark and Patrick- later your family have daughter Bridget married to John Kerrigan (there is a marriage in Preston) and they still have Mary and Mark - ages are same/similar.

Hello again,

I found the following marriages:

22 July 1876
John Kerigan and Eliza (?) Lyons   (Eliza was transcribed with a question mark)
Fathers:  Patrick Kerigan and Thomas Lyons
Witnesses:
Edward Sweeney, Marshside
Elizabeth Easham(?), Southport
Edward Sweeney is on my family tree and he married Elizabeth Eastham.

6th May 1893
James Keregan and Bridget Riley, both of Little Ireland
Fathers:  Patrick Keregan and Thomas Riley
Witnesses:  John and Agnes Burke, Bury Road, Birkdale

On October 17 1874  John Kerrigan and Ellen Cain were witnesses at the wedding of Michael Cain and Mary McGurn.   Witnesses were usually family members so this might be useful information.

As the Kerrigans were close to my Conways and Sweeneys, it is possible that they came from the same area in Ireland.
My family came from Westport, Mayo.

If you have a look at the censuses it will give you an idea of when they arrived in England and hopefully might give a town of birth as well as "Ireland".
(I found one entry stating "Westport" in 1851!)
