none of us but that's the fun of it! We have to be a bit like sponges absorbing things and hoping that it all makes sense.
I wish you luck- I was fortunate that my dad was the Mayo link so had a place to begin. Even so cannot go much further back. It's a fabulous place to come from though!
If I can help again, please don't hesitate to ask- all rootschatters are good at digging and delving to try to find the smallest clue.

I meant to say - I cannot find any ref to a 'back vicar street 'in Preston as stated earlier.

Maybe the name changed - anyone know??

from the enumeration district description it looks to have been around Snow Hill/Patten Street/ Lawson Street/High Street area.

Searching Little Ireland today, I came across your messages.  My great grandfather Edward Allen whose father ran the New Inn at Marshside in 1851 census.  I haven't been searching for a while and am not sure of my dates but have the deaths from the St Marie's of the Sands listing book.  In any case, James Regan and Sarah were the parents of Sarah Regan b. 1851 who married Edward Allen in 1875 and had Elizabeth in 1877 and Richard Sephton in 1879.  The Edward Allen family moved to the US in 1881 and settled in Cleveland Ohio where they died, Sarah Regan Allen in 1909.  I think we are definitely family.  Bridget, Mary, Martin, Mark, Patrick and Sarah were the siblings in the James Regan family.  I would love to hear more from you.  I visited Southport in 1998 when I knew only a bit about  the family.  I can't add much but maybe you can for me.  Thanks.

Hi runicman,
a belated welcome to rootschat. :)
do you have your family in the censuses? I think it's them who are in Preston in 1851 and they have a child Patrick with them who was born in Chester. Is this your family? So they would have arrived in Southport via Preston and Chester.
This would tell you that they arrived sometime between Mary 1841/43 and Patrick 1847. I know it doesn't help with Mayo origins though.
best wishes

Long time no post. You were 'correct' as our family DID come from Preston. We got the 1851 census and it is them. I checked Cheshire BDMs and discovered that  Patrick was born in 1847. I also think he may have died in 1860.
