Many thanks - although there is no mention of the Regan name the Kerrigan surname may help .  I shall have to come back to this one.

Hello again

Having looked further back in the records, it appears that some of the Regans were in Southport in 1849 although I can't find them on the 1851 census

1st Dec 1859  Birth
Mary Mulvaney
Parents Joseph Mulvaney and Bridget Brohony
Witnesses John Regan and Elizabeth Haigh

30th July 1849   Birth
Thomas Horan
Parents Michael Horan and Bridget Gill
Witnesses James Regan and Bridget O'Connell

4 September 1851  Birth
Sarah Regan
Parents James Regan and Sarah Keregan
Witnesses John Garry and Ann Brohony

Interestingly, to tie in with the Horan/Regan connection above, I found the following:

5th Nov 1892  Marriage
James Horan - father Martin Regan!!  Living in Little Ireland
Catherine Gannon, father Michael Gannon.  135 St. Luke's Grove, Southport
Witnesses:  Mary and Bartholomew Cairns, 13 St. Luke's Grove.

If I find any more I will let you know

All fascinating stuff - I am particularly interested in the Kerrigan / Kerragan side the lady who I think later became 'Sarah Regan'.

Born in Connaught.

Hello again runicman,

Connacht/ Connaught is the province in the West of Ireland in which Mayo is one of the counties.
I know you don't think that the Preston family I gave you are yours but Sandgrounders information does indicate that your family were in England in 1851 with the birth of Sarah.
best wishes

This bit is very interesting

4 September 1851  Birth
Sarah Regan
Parents James Regan and Sarah Keregan

I have a feeling that this may be on the right track. We thought that Mark Regan was their only child though who later got wed in 1870 to Ellen Wilkinson at St Maries church

Hello again,

I am posting the 1861 census which I think you will agree is yours. Then I am posting the 1851 which I referred to earlier for you to compare.

1861 RG9; Piece: 2760; Folio: 79; Page: 12

New Ireland, Marshside North Meols district

James Regan head married 50 yrs agricultural labourer b Ireland
Sarah wife 50 yrs washerwoman b Ireland
Mary dughter 21 yrs house servant b Ireland
Mark son 19 yrs ag labourer b Ireland
John Kerrigan son in law married 21 yrs labourer b Ireland
Bridget Kerrigan daughter married 22 yrs housekeeper b Lancashire North Meols
Sarah Regan daughter 10 yrs scholar b Lancashire North Meols

I would imagine that there is an error in Bridget's birthplace in 1861

1851 HO107; Piece: 2267; Folio: 492; Page: 35

with a large group of 'lodgers' in the home of Jane McGrath and daughters

6 Back Vicar Street Preston
James Regan 40 yrs labourer b Ireland
Sally 41 yrs b Ireland
Bridget 14 yrs b Ireland
Mary 12 yrs b Ireland
Mark 10  yrs b Ireland
Patrick 4 yrs b Cheshire Chester

As I said earlier, the ages fit, the children fit with 1851 and 1861 apart from Patrick who presumably has died.

Family Search has an extracted record :
Patrick Regan
birth: 24 Jan 1847
christening: 2 Feb 1847  St Werburgh's Chester
Parents: James Regan and Seragh Kinsay

That is a possibility despite the odd spelling. I thought that a Patrick Regan born Wirral may be him but he dies later that year so I can't spot a birth for a Patrick.

Free BMD has a marriage September 1860 in Preston

Bridget Regan and James Karigan as possible spouses.

best wishes

Wondeful date thank you so much - I will ask the family what they think.

We seem to have hit a brickwall with data from Mayo for James as apparently some fire destroyed a lot of Irish records.

I don't know where your previous message has gone to   ???
I got a notification that you had posted but it is not on the thread. Then I saw it by going into your previous postings and replied here but your message still isn't here. :o

Yes it is difficult to get data from Mayo, although there are now some parish records online. That is your problem- not knowing where in Mayo James and Sarah are from and the dates involved. Even Mark's birth is very early for any records which may be there.
I have tried to find Bridget Kerrigan in censuses with no results so even finding the other children, if this is your family, is proving difficult. You'll just have to keep chipping away and hope for the best.  ;)
best wishes

We are very grateful for your help and the Preston link is most fascinating. you are right about the Mayo thing being hard to trace also as we have been at it for ages. I suppoose its all about knowing where to look AND WE ARE NOT EXPERT AT THIS STUFF. .
