Bowlers of Kerry
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 20:22 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have information on the Bowlers?  My ancestor is Michael Patrick Bowler, born circa 1855 and lived in Reycastle, Kells, Cahersiveen CPU, Co. Kerry.  They called him Mick the Wood, and I suspect he came from the Wood road area of Ballybowler.  If anyone has information on the Bowlers of Ballybowler I would appreciate it.

ID: I73375198
Name: Michael BOWLER
Given Name: Michael
Surname: Bowler
Sex: M
Birth: Abt. 1846 in Reycastle, Kells, Co. Kerry, Ireland
Death: 1933 in Reycastle, Kells, Co. Kerry, Ireland
Burial: Unknown Killivorngue Burial Grounds, Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, Ireland
Note:
Alias: Mickey the /Wood/
Michael "Granda" BOWLER (also know as Mickey the Wood) was born in and
died in Reycastle, County Kerry, Ireland. He got his nick name because
he lived in the woods next to the property. According to information
given to Julia Bowler Bazenas by relatives she met in Ireland, he was
quite a character. His granddaughter Alice Bowler Ogden said that Mick
evidently liked to ride his horse around his property giving honors to
the workers. Dan Bowler, his great grandson has an oil painting of
Mick. Dan's wife Vicky had heard that Mick had been a stern man.
Lillian Bowler Spiers wrote in a letter to Julia that Mick was 87 when he
died in 1933, putting his birth year she estimated as 1846. Deb Johansen
has a letter that Mick sent to his granddaughter Bessie in 1929, and
another that Mick sent to his son John in early 1930:
Recastle
Kells
Jan 5 1930
My Dear Son John,
I am very glad to hear that yourself and family are all well.
I am very thankful to you for the money which you sent me and which I
wanted very badly as times are not very prosperous with us now. Do you
see Maurice or do you know anything about him. We have only three cows
now as we lost three cows and a horse for the past year. I did not get
any letter from Maurice with the past ten years but I have heard several
times that he is doing well. Times are not thriving very good with us.
I have no more to say now but I am always praying for you and I'd like to
hear from you often. I am 84 years now so I suppose I won't get many
more letters from you.
May the Lord bless and share you all. Wishing you a happy new
year.
From
Your Fond Father
According to Mick's granddaughter Lillie Bowler Spiers, an English artist
who was on holidays down at Kells staying at the Lodge where Mick's
grandson John now lives apparently painted this picture. The lodge was
owned by Richard Blennerhasset and he and "granddad" were great friends;
Richard always made a point of visiting Mick the Wood when he came to
Kells every summer and they always had a whiskey together.
Michael and Catherine had seven children: John Joseph, Maurice, Michael
Richard, Patrick, Cornelius, Timothy, and Bridget. John may have been
the oldest.
He married Kate Shea in Ireland, where she was born and died. The family
went to Church in Caharciveen, according to Jules Bazenas.
According to the owner of Bowler's market in Caherciveen, Ireland, the
Bowler's from Dingle came from Spain with the Spanish armada. They are
not related to the Bowlers from Kells. He told Julie Bowler Bazenas that
he is descended from the Spanish Bowlers from Dingle and that his
relatives are darker in complexion and hair color than the Kells Bowlers.
A forefather of Carol, Edward, David, Thomas, Douglas, and Richard
Heffernan (on their mother's side) served as Officer in Cromwell's army
in England. After the war, he was awarded land in Ireland; land named
Rea castle. This land has been handed down through the years. (Need to
make sure this is the correct family.) The source of this information is
Carol Ann Heffernan Whitehouse's grade school paper on her family tree.
I have no verification that this is true.
