CLAVEY
« on: Wednesday 08 February 06 09:17 GMT (UK) »
Just to let everyone know that the great work of my Father - Brian Alfred Clavey, is now published on the Web going back to 1500's. Brian is son of Alfred, son of Henry, son of George, son of Matilda, son of Philip, son of John, son of Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Richard Clavey of Stoke Lane. Brian died last year.

My branch of the Claveys is very much Somerset based - Mendip hills.

I know that Brian has been in touch with lots of Claveys around the world. There are two main family groups. The German group and the English group. Only the English group is found in the tree.

Most Clavey's in America and Germany are of the German family grouping. Most Clavey's in Australia are from the English Group (My Great Great Grandfather) Some notable American exceptions are that the Clavey that named "Clavey river" (he had a farm near it) was an English Clavey. http://family.sapphire-solutions.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=17

The clavey family tree and forum can be found at: www.clavey.org

A question that has always interested me is the connection between the two branches. The Germans are mainly from the North West. It may just be a surname coincidence, although both groups say Clavey the same way i.e. Clay Vee and not Cla V Ee (Most people reading my name for the first time get this wrong!)

Another interesting question is does the French town of "Claveyson" have any connection?

Hi

I am also searching my family tree of claveys in the mendip hills, I am unable to open up your family tree though.

Are you able to repost the link for me?
My grandad was Theodore randel clavey
My greatgrandad was charles clavey
GreatGreat grandad Richard ford clavey

I'm hoping there are some links in your tree that can help with some gaps

I'm also linked to the paynes, mints and taylors

Looking forward to looking at your tree.
Karen

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

This thread was started in 2006, and the Original Poster hasn't been online since 19th February 2006!

Possibly his email address is still working, in which case he will get a notification?

Hi Karen,

and welcome to Rootschat from me. I have Claveys in my tree (from Stoke Lane) and remember the web site very well. I don't think it's been operational for some time. As KGarrad says, it might be worth trying the email address. I'll look back at my records and see if I had any contact with the OP in the past and let you know. Where do your family come from?

Hi
Thanks for the welcome. It was a long shot!
The claveys I am looking for come from the mendips in Somerset mainly.
Would you have any link there?

Yes, Stoke Lane (or Stoke St Michael) is in the Mendip area.  Clavey was a fairly common name in the area; in my research I've found them in Ashwick and Chewton Mendip and elsewhere. Where precisely do your family come from?

I'm the OPC for Chewton and have transcribed the parish registers, so it might be best if you let me know what you have and I'll check against my data. I must say much of what I've done has been superceded by the excellent images now in Ancestry, but don't worry if you don't subscribe as I can check for you. It might be worth looking at the Chewton Mendip History site too - just google it - it has a section on each family name. If you'd like, now you have made three posts you can send a PM ( click on the icon on this reply) rather than post all the information in the site - but of course no-one else will see it if you do and you never know who else might be able to help,

Many thanks for the information- I am new to this family researching and any help is appreciated.

I will post it here as others may have information:

this is what i have so far:

my granddad Clavey and his siblings
Dennis, Ken, Blanche, Charles, Doreen, Hazel, Rendal Theodore (granddad)
I have a fair bit of information on these but not much going back ....

Their parents were:
Charles Clavey and Caroline Payne (the Payne line links back to Jesse Payne from Hinton Blewitt and am missing a few parts to this line too)

Charles parents: Richard Ford Clavey 1848/50 and Louisa ? 1856/2
Charles siblings: George 1876, Emily 1874 and Richard

Richard Ford Clavey parents: James Clavey and Caroline ?1823
Richards siblings: George 1851, Henry 1847, Emily 1883 and Eliza 1856

I have been using the census's mainly, but will look at the Chewton site you mention and if you are able to help that would be great.

Many thanks
