HELP: McIntosh and Grant Families Nairn / Inverness
« on: Friday 10 February 06 04:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I need a little help to make a connection. ???

I have an Alexander MCINTOSH born in Scotland living in England in 1861 & 1871.  Doesn't say where he is born other than Scotland.  He was married twice.  His marriage certificate says his father is Alexander McIntosh (SADDLER).  The verbal record of the family says he came from Nairn/Inverness.

He had two girls with his first wife Elizabeth SMITH.  An Elizabeth McIntosh and Rachel McIntosh.  Born in London. Alexander MCINTOSH was a BAKER in London.

He had two children with his second wife Elizabeth COLSTON.  Lydia Alice and John Grant McIntosh, born in London.  Elizabeth McIntosh is a widow in 1881.

The census records quote Alexander McIntosh's birth from 1833 - 1836.  He died in January of 1874, and his age is noted as 38 (c. 1836) on the death certificate.

In 1881 his daughter Rachel McIntosh from his first marriage was living with Alexander and Jessie GRANT and family in Suffolk, England, and Rachel is noted as NIECE.

All of Alexander and Jessie GRANT's children were born in Nairn.

I found a record of a marriage for a Alexander Grant and Jessie Mackintosh on June 1, 1849 in Nairn, along with christenings of all of their children in Nairn.  I have also found this GRANT family in the 1861 and 1871 census living at 66/68 High Street in Nairn.  Alexander GRANT was a Baker.

In the 1861 census in Nairn two doors away from Alexander and Jessie is an Isabella MacIntosh, widow age 58 born Moy? Inverneshire, with son Donald MacIntosh age 18, Appr. Laywer Clerk born Nairn.  (I don't know if there is any relationship with this MacIntosh family to Jessie MacIntosh above).

Jessie's GRANT (nee McIntosh's) birth is noted c. 1825 in Inverness in both the 1861 & 1871 Scottish census.

I'm trying to find the parent's of Alexander and Jessie McIntosh.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Tina

Hi There,
You explained that so very well, thankyou.... :D

I think the best thing, is to wait for the 1851 Census that will come on line within a week or two, (on Scotlandspeople). Then you could try for him as a teenager at home...he should have started his baker apprenticeship...
The other thing you could do is look for a marriage of the son Donald, to see who his parents names are? or easier still would be to look for the death of Isabella....
Keep us posted...
I will have a look on the IGI.
Regards,
Jo

Modified............
I searched for any Donald Macintosh born nairn about 1843 with a mother Isabella, and this family came up, but sadly the father was William.....This is only a possible right family for Donald but, notice the first child was born at Moy ...so that would put Isabella at Moy where she said she was from, so I feel this family are the ones in the 1861c, which would make Isabella not the mother of your Alexander and Jesse......

remember though, Jesse most likely was christened Jesse but, she could be any name almost.... Jane Janet Margaret....
Jesse is often an affectionate name and they can keep it through life, ....just to confuse us further......
.........

Hi Jo,

Thanks very much for trying to help out, any suggestion is always good....it keeps you thinking.

A couple of weeks doesn't sound like too much time to wait.  Hopefully I will find him in the 1851 census in Scotland!

Thanks again,

Tina :)

Hi Tina,
Just to let you know that my great grandfather was born in Nairn and was a John Grant McIntosh B 1829 , who married a Jessie Rose. His father was Alexander  and mother Jean of Jane McKensie. We are also connected to the loch Moy area where I think Alexander was an estate manager. I go back two more generations and have been trying desperately to find the Grant connection with little result. John had a sister who was Grace Grant, so it's obviously from a female relative  further back, but so far I can't find one that fits in with our dates. John Grants father Alex was born circa 1798. I feel there must be a connection with your McIntoshes but just can't see it. What do you think?
I'm in Australia by the way.
cheers Jill

Hi There,
This so far past the post, isn't it.
I have found the family, but I bet you have as well.

1841 Census.
Bridgle St, Inverness.

Alexander McIntosh, 47yrs, Saddler
Rachel, 41yrs, born England
Elizabeth , 18yrs,
Jessie, 16yrs,
Julia, 9yrs
Alexander 7yrs

Halilchie 2yrs
Isabella McDonald, 20yrs, farm servant
Catherine Dingwall, 21yrs, farm servant
John Mackintosh 18yrs, app saddler
George Mackintosh, 20yrs, app saddler

I think this is the family in the 1851c
It might explain some of the strange name interpretations in the previous census.

Rachel McIntosh, 53yrs, Lodging Keeper, born Inverness
Jemima 19yrs, inverness
Lydia 14yrs
Matilda 11yrs
Margaret 8yrs
all daughter of Rachel.

Ok we have Alexander McIntosh married to Rachel Bruce. 25 / 4 / 1821 Inverness

Alexander McIntosh was           born 5 / 12 / 1832 Inverness.
Janet  McIntosh                            chr 8 / 10 / 1823 Inverness

Matilda McIntosh                             b 25 / 1 / 1829

Margaret McIntosh                        c 8 / 9 / 1825

Hi Jillaroo, fellow aussie,
I fear for 'T M' for they have not been on RC for over a year and half.
Hope they are ok.
I do hope though that there is some sort of connection to you.
kindest regards to you and TM

Sorry Kenjo, but I've only been on here twice and don't really know TM. Are they Aussies as well?
Cheers Jill.
