marriage stellarton/pictou novascotia?1900's
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 07:28 GMT (UK) »
Advice please on tracking marriage details of grandparents.
John Arthrell emmigrated from CAnnock UK as coalminer to Novascotia.Rebecca Mason joined him in Stellarton Pictou county and married him.A researcher on the site (RLeach...thanks again!) found them on the 1911 census for me. I am now after their marriage details if possible.Married approx 1900-1902.They had 2 children who died and then Amy 1904.
They probably married at home and I think they were methodists.

Dawn,

Full online access to marriage records at Nova Scotia Archives is planned for April 2006.  It sounds like records before 1908 can be a bit spotty though.  I hope yours will turn up...

These two sites give slightly conflicting info about the availability of Pictou county records for the early 1900s:

I  will  check  this  out   at   the  Pictou  center  next  week  if  I  get  a  chance. There  were  not  many  places  to  marry  in  Stellarton  and  as  you  say  may  have  been  at  home. Do  you  know  if  family  is  still  in  the  area?

Thankyou so much and if you do have the time that would be fantastic!
I think that there are still Arthrells in the area, but although we are directly related, we have not kept in touch, because my Grandparents returned to the UK.They took over an area that was a ghost town at the time, and had to dig the floors out before they could move in.
Any help would be great,
Dawn

Dawn ,I  had  no  luck  finding  a  marriage  for  you  no mention  of  the  name  Arthrell  and  I  checked  the  local  directory  and  no one  by  the  name  only  in  Ontario  so  perhaps  they  moved  on.

Dear Gransworld..thankyou so much for having a look for me.I will have to keep looking.Hopefully there will come a day when I will be able to visit Canada for myself and have a " research holiday"... ::)I remember mention of a place called Paris, but as they were on the Stellarton Census in 1911 , I assumed that was where they settled first.
Thank's again and good luck with your research.

Hi Dawn,

Not sure if this is one of yours, but there is a Gerald Arthrell who died in WWII.  He was born in 1919 in Nova Scotia.  His father is listed as Herbert Arthrell.  On his death certificate it gives his address as Church Street, Paris, Ontario.
