John Davies, hawker
« on: Friday 17 February 06 18:49 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with my brick wall re John Davies, hawker?

My great grandmother, Ellen Davies, was born in Aberystwyth in 1852 at Moor Street.  Her birth certificate states that her father is John Davies, hawker,  and her mother is Dorothy Jones.  Ellen's marriage certificate in 1870 (to Thomas Jenkins, an iron moulder)  also states that her father is a hawker, with her residence at time of marriage as Bonsall's Row.

I can find no reference to the Davies family on any census, and the only marriage I can find of a John Davies to a Dorothy Jones is in 1850 in Bangor, but the given occupation is a boatman, so I have no idea how to proceed now.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I will be most grateful! :'(

Hi Cardiff  -  my home city!

Thanks for your message.

Yes I've done a lot of searching round this subject, but the only John Davies I can find in Cardigan in 1851, married to  a Dorothy , is listed as a shoemaker, and they don't live in the area of Ellen's birth in 1852 (Moor Street, Aberystwyth) which was only a few months after the census.  I have no idea where  she could have been in the family sibling order, and to be honest, I've abandoned this search for a while for lack of evidence. John, her father, is definitely down as a hawker on her birth certificate, of which I have a copy.

If she was the youngest in the family, John and Dorothy may have been married before 1837, and I have no access to local marriages at that time.  If anyone can help me there, I'd be very grateful.  Dorothy Jones could have come from anywhere!  When Ellen married Thomas Jenkins, her residence was given as Bonsall's Row, Aberystwyth, which I think was even more humble than Moor Street.

I'll check my facts again and see if I can update anything.  I noticed that you are following Jenkins of Cardigan also.

Hi
My Jenkins are from Abermagwr Blacksmiths any connection? I have all the family.
So you are looking for a Dorothy Jones =m= to John Davies  Do you have Ellen on the 1861 census?
Families moved around areas and houses they where rented  and often moved to the next street.
I will have a look but not much to go on.
cheers cardiff ???

Hi

I've had another check, and I think they weren't around in Cardiganshire at the time of the 1861 census either,  and presumably if John Davies was hawking his wares, the family might have gone with him.  They could have been anywhere in the country.  I'm keeping an open mind, but it is frustrating.

Re the Jenkins family:  Thomas Jenkins' father was Edward Jenkins, a tailor,(married to Mary Jones),  living in Mary Street in various houses, as well as in Moor Street.  I don't know anything about Edward's parentage.  If I could get hold of Aberystwyth (Llanbadarn) parish records, I might be able to find out more.  I think Ed and Mary were married in 1836.  They show up on the 1841 census with John Jenkins aged 2 and Ed Jr aged a few weeks.
