Having looked at the S.A. address, and noted their registration and search fees, I feel that they are, unfortunately, out of my league.

Do you know  the parents first names? If so. you could check NZ Archives to see if a will was probated. This would give you an area of NZ to concentrate on. I see in Telecom white pages the name Cheyne is widely distributed throughout NZ.
