1861 + 1871 census, CHAPMAN +/or STANNARD
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi, could some kind soul please look up an Anna Chapman for me?

I'm trying to follow an Anna Chapman, b. @1849 in Wetheringsett, Suffolk. I have details of the 1851 census but she's disappeared from the family home in the 1861 census when she would have been @ 12yrs old.

I found a marriage in the bmd index to either a John Stannard or a Frederick Lester in Hartismere, Sep qu. 1868 which looks like my Anna Chapman. I couldn't find an Anna Lester but did find  an Anna Stannard in the 1881 census who was born in Suffolk in 1849, however I can't see any other details.

Would somebody be able to look for an Anna Stannard in the 1871 census?

Any help much appreciated  :)

Hi Joe

Thanks for looking that up for me - it looks more like my Anna now as it's Wetheringsett cum Brockford and not just 'Suffolk' !

Thank you  ;D

I can only find this Anna/Ann in 1861.  I suppose that it is just possible that she fibbed about her age to get the job?  The enumerator has definitely written 18. :-\

Thanks for that Rick   :D  much appreciated!

I thought she must have been working as I found her 2 younger sisters on the 81 census working in Clapham, one of them 13 years old at the time. Both of their birth places were wrong though - one Wethington and one Wetherington.  When I next go to the FRC I'm going to check the original page to see what's actually written down.

But surely, even in those days, no one would be daft enough to think a 12 year old was 18!!!!!  Maybe she was very mature for her age, lol!

Thanks again Rick
