Where and When in Stoke???????
« on: Monday 27 February 06 23:21 GMT (UK) »
Can Anybody help to identify the location of this Photograph, in Stoke, Staffordshire??????? I am guessing the date to be around 1900-1910. There is what looks to be a public house in the foreground.

    Yours hopefully

Hallo, Steve

If yiou can get hold of a Kelly's Directory for Staffordshire you might get a hit on the veterinary names (even though you can only see partial names) which should give you a street address.

Good luck
Philip

The vets names on the advertising board are Arthur Dowdall & James Yates trading as Yates & Dowdall, Stafford St, Longton. This info is from the Court Guide & County Blue Book of Warks,Worcs & Staffs 1902. Whether this pic is of Stafford St is another matter!

Thanks to all,

I now believe that the pub in the foreground  is the Robin hood In Longton, and the view is of the Strand, with the Church of st john's in the background. I am still a little sceptical but think that it may be the answer.

  Thanks Steve

The photograph comes from the Warrillow Collection, Keele University, circa 1915.
The pub in question is the Rose & Crown. The picture confirms the legend that it's nickname was The Glass Barrel.
James Yates was the owner and licensee from 1885 to 9th November 1912.
On the 9th December 1962 the Rose & Crown ceased trading.
The Robin Hood (originally the Robin Hood & Little John) stood next door to the right.
The address was Flint Street becoming Stafford Street and then The Strand.
Alan.
