1841 census lookup please - Broseley
« on: Tuesday 28 February 06 21:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I am looking for the Ashwood Family in the 1841 Census

John Nicholls Ashwood, age 52, surgeon, born Broseley
Jenny Stephens Ashwood (Jane), wife, age 46, born Brixham, Devon
Mary Rosetta Ashwood, dau, age 20, born Broseley

I know that in 1829 the family were in Broseley, Shropshire, by 1850 they were in Northam Devon, however I could not find them in the 1851 census.

  Would appreciate any help

                                                    Kim

hello

possibly of no use but in the same Pigot's directory that mentions John as a surgeon there is a Jeremiah Ashwood listed as a corn miller in Broseley.

Hi Kim, I just came across your thread about the Ashwoods of Broseley (from 10 years ago!), and I was curious about your relationship to the family? Jeremiah Ashwood was my great great grandfather.
Thanks, Geoff

Hi Geoff

Sorry for the delay in replying...my P.C. containing all my Family history info was offline.
My connection to the Ashwood Family is very, very distant I'm afraid...Jenny Stephens FRANCE (Jane)who married John Nicholls ASHWOOD was the sister of my ancestor Susanna Bartlett FRANCE who married Charles ALDRICH...Susanna & Charles were my Great Great Great Grandparents

Hi Kim,
Thanks for your reply. Jeremiah was the brother of John Nicholls Ashwood, so I guess we are distantly related. I don't know if you have researched John Nicholls Ashwood, but he was an interesting man - as well as being a surgeon and serving in the Royal Marines, he was also a missionary in Sierra Leone, where he died in 1850. His son John and daughter Susanna also spent time in Sierra Leone, he was the acting Colonial Secretary, and she married the American Consul, and spent the rest of her life in America.

Regards, Geoff

Thanks Geoff

I didn't have a death for John Nicholls Ashwood so that solves that mystery...I did note that Susanna Bartlett Ashwood married Henry Rider in Sierra Leone 1861 & had 5 children & then married Charles Endicott in Massacusetts USA in 1878 & had another child. I don't have a death for Henry Rider or Susanna or any of the Ashwood children for that matter.

I do have a note from the British Newspaper Archives that a John Ashwood died 18th Aug 1861 marked TBC

Hi Kim,
The dates of death are as follows:-
Henry Rider           1871 Salem, Massachusetts
Charles Endicott    1906 Salem, Massachusetts
Susanna Bartlett Ashwood   1930 Salem, Massachusetts
Mary Rosetta Ashwood  1900 Exeter, Devon
France Bywater Ashwood  1856 London
Jane Ashwood              1900 Exeter
Eliza Ashwood              1912 Exeter
John Ashwood              1905 Bristol
Mary Anne Ashwood      b1829, no death record found
Nathaniel Ashwood        1832 Brixham, Devon
Patterson Ashwood       b1831, no death record found
Louisa Ashwood            1904 Exeter

I cannot see how to attach documents in this forum, but I can send you copies of the baptisms of several of the children (all on the same day), and the newspaper report of John's death, but if you are interested, I can email them to you.

Regards, Geoff
