The following is a list of young men who were members of the Edgeworthstown Volunteer Corps and who volunteered for active service and left to undergo a course in military training at the nearest military depot: Patrick Cullen, Peter Dempsey, Patrick Dermody, Francis Dooris, Patrick Gallagher, John Grimes,  John Keena, John Nugent, William Nugent, Thomas O’Rourke

There were also 23 others belonging to the regular army and reserve force who were on active service in France or with the colours. They were :  Michael Baldwin, Gerald Conderson, James Courtney,(missing since the battle of Mons), James Dempsey, James Dempsey, John Dempsey, Michael Dempsey, Richard Dempsey, Terence Dempsey, William Dempsey, Willie Dempsey, Jas Feally, Patrick Green, Willie Green, Edward Grimes,  Patrick Keena,  Serg Michael Kiernan. Willie King, Francis McGuinness,  John Mallon,  F O’Hara, James Smith,   Most of the above young men were in the 1st and 2nd battalion Leinster Regiment but a good number were in the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

The Longford Library holds record books of the Co. Longford Militia, (1783-1855) and the list of Longford born soldiers killed in action while serving with British Regiments in the Great War as well as a limited number of statements of local activists in the War of Independence.
