CARROLL / CAROLAN family - Fermanagh
« on: Monday 06 March 06 15:02 GMT (UK) »
Francis CAROLAN was baptised at Sacred Heart Church, Clones 30 Mar 1909
He was the son of Francis CAROLAN and Margaret SMYTH
His father Francis was born 1879 in Doones (that's what it looks like!!) in Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, son of Bernard CARROLL and Mary Anne LYNCH

Somewhere along the line the name changed from CARROLL to CAROLAN.

This is my first attempt at tracing this Irish line and I am uncertain as to what resources are available.

I would be grateful for any help to get me started.

Thanks

If anyone finds they are related to this family, I am in contact with a definite relative of theirs.

Seeking info on the Family of Johanna Carroll who married Robert Hodges circa 1882-83. They had two children and were residing in Swellan, County Cavan, in 1887 when my grandfather Samuel Nevin Hodges was born. Robert was the son of Samuel Hodges and Catherine Nevin of Blackrock, County Cork. Johanna emigrated to the United States in the late 1890's after the death of Robert (cause and location of death unknown.  Robert had been employed by the railroad in Swellan). Johanna marrreid a Louis Brandt in New Orleans and lived there until her death in 1932.  She was born circa 1861. Dath notice listed her former residence as Dublin.
Enniskillen, Cork, Cavan, Dublin ; families of Hodges, Carroll, Nevin, McCann; Jack, Felix, Hugh, & Lizzie McCann of Enniskillen

Although Carroll and Carolan have quite separate genealogical orgins, it might be worth mentioning that tracditionally the spelling of the latter was O'CARROLAN - this spelling can still be seen in some very old cemeteries on the Cavan/Meath border, including a beautiful tombstone (now laying flat) of a CARROLAN chieftian and the wife.

When my ancestor came (involuntarily) to the penal colony of NSW in 1820, the British authorities listed him as CARROLL, when his name was clearly CAR(R)OLAN.

Hi, I may have information about Carolans from Lisnaskea and I think it may be the ones you're talking about. I know this post is old but if you could get in touch with me it would be greatly appreciated.
