Granny's Occupation- COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 11:34 GMT (UK) »
???On my Grandmother's wedding certificate (Lurgan Registry Office) she gave her occupation as 'veiner'.  Nobody can tell me what this is.  She was married in 1886 and lived and worked in Lurgan, presumably in one of the mills there.  Her maiden name was Bessy McConnell and she married James Cully.  Can't find their birth registrations.

Wish it was!  His father was James, and the only one I can find so far is in Co. Cavan.  Strangely, enough all my husbands Wallaces come from Markethill.  Thanks for the thought.  Rosemary

Not been able to come up with a definition of veiner, but I did come across this site which, if you don't know it already, might be of general interest:

Good luck ;D

A veiner is a tool used in leather and wood carving for producing intricate patterns e.g. leaves and flowers.  It does however seem to have been used for someone who used such a tool to produce patterns on leather.

Does this fit with your knowledge?

Thanks.  I know Lurgan Ancestry well.  In fact, you'll find my granny living in Anne Street, widowed with 5 children on their 1901 census entry.  It's a great sight and has been very helpful in my research.
I still think a veiner is something to do with drawn thread work in the linen industry, as Bessy taught me to do this when I was a child.
