how do I find out about Heysham Hall
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 15:02 GMT (UK) »
My g-g-g-great grandfather (Thomas Pennington) died in 1841.  I have a copy of his will and it says that he lived at Heysham Hall.  On the death cert. it says that he died at Barrow Greaves and his son, Lawrence was in attendance.

I am trying to establish how long Thomas lived at Heysham Hall and indeed any info I can find out about the place would be helpful.  Can anyone help out here?  In the will it sounds like Thomas owned Heysham Hall.  It mentions that he had tenents in OVerton.

Thanks

You can also contact Carnforth Library

Also just type Overton Heysham in Google. This gives you information.

Good Luck.

Thanks to Dinkey and Victoria.  I have just checked these links out and found a beautiful photo of Heysham Hall hotel.

If anyone has any tips on how I can find out how long Thomas Pennington had lived in Heysham Hall (this is all pre-census years) I would be grateful.

I have always contacted library in close proximty to place of birth. Usually there is a family history librarian who will give you details if they can. Also if you contact wrong library they will point you in right direction.
I think I gave you name of library which I believed to hold records for Heysham.

Good Luck

Hi Dianer,
Just read this thread and wondered if you found the info re Heysham Hall you were looking for? I live in heysham near where the Hall stood, it was demolished a few years age, it was flats in later years and my brother lived in one. Our lacal library has lots of info on the hall which is fairly interesting.
If you didn't find what you wanted let me know and will see if I can help.
Kind regards, Ju

HI Ju,

yes, I am still interested in finding out about Heysham Hall.  I had some help a while ago though and it would appear that my ancestor, Thomas Pennington lived in one of the estate houses.  He died in 1841 and I am really trying to find out how long he lived there (before he died) and who else lived with him.  This is pre-1841 census and so I am abit stuck.  Any ideas?

I have just come across your 2006 enquiry about Heysham Hall. That term can refer to one or other of at least three 19th century buildings. In this case it seems certainly the one which is now the Old Hall Inn.
In the Tithe schedule of 1838 for Heysham the owner of that property is listed as Thomas Rawsthorne, solicitor in Lancaster, and the occupier as Thomas Pennington. Your documentation is the first I have heard of which agrees with this. Thank you. I have for a long time been aware that a Thomas Pennington lived in Lancaster (Castle Hill) in the 1841 census and died later the same year. You mention 'Barrow Greaves'; There is a Greaves Road in Lancaster and a Greaves Methodist Church (foundation date not known to me as yet).
Thomas Rawsthorne himself lived in Heysham, and built (on a previously building site) what was also known as Heysham Hall, round about 1838-40. That building no longer exists, but there are remnants in Heysham Hall Drive and Heysham Hall Avenue today.

Later:
Barrow Greaves is a farm to the south of Lancaster, and still appears to be a working farm not engulfed by urban sprawl. It is just on the other side of the M6 where it passes Lancaster University. Heysham Old Hall also had farm buildings as part of it; only in the mid 19th century did Old Hall Farm become a separate entity from Heysham Old Hall with different occupants. Thomas Pennington in the Tithe schedula also 'occupied' significant amounts of land in Heysham which he presumably farmed. At some point in later life (after 1838) he must have moved to Barrow Greaves farm. Does that farm figure anywhere else in your ancestral records?
