Where are these places?
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 04:51 GMT (UK) »
I have found the following details for a headstone at Castleton.

Memory of Christain Armstrong spouse of William Cowan d Geillfoot 15.2.1846 aged 23. William Cowan d Cleughbrae June 1855
aged 34. Agnes Henderson his mother d Tweedenhead 12.11.1825 aged 38. Jane his daughter d Taillhead 12.4.1854 aged 9. Janet
Robson wife of Wm Cowan Senior died at Kershope 21.7.1867 aged 80. Thomas their son d. at Harden 28.6.1857 aged 28. Wm Cowan Senior
d at Blackline 1/11/1873 aged 87.

I can't seem to track down any of the deaths (after 1855) on Scotland's People though.  Are these places in Roxburghshire or could they be in Northumberland?  I know other family members have been across the border a few times.  The William Cowan who died in 1855 was in Northumberland for the 1851 census staying with or visiting a brother.

At least if the places are in Northumberland I know where to search for records.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Debbie,

Those Cowans certainly get about a bit....

I'm not 100% sure on all of them but, here goes,

There is a Gilfoot just outside Dumfries that might be a possibility, likewise with Cleughbrae (can both be found on www.multimap.co.uk)

Tweedenhead is in Castleton (in the Newcastleton Forest) - can be found on www.streetmap.co.uk.

Kershope is also in Castleton, right down on the border with Northumberland.

From the Genuki Roxburghshire Gazetteer, Harden looks like it is in Roberton (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROX/gazetteer/index.html)

I don't know about any of the others - sorry!

Cheers,

Hi Clare,

Did manage to track down Thomas Cowan's death (1857).  Harden is in Castleton.  From there have found a marriage and 4 children.  Let me know if you want details.

I have found a death index for a William Cowan at Longtown in Cumbria.  The age, quarter and year all fit.  Now to work my way through English records...  Why couldn't they have stayed above the border??   Things would have been much easier for us then!!

Kershope is the cottage at English Kershope. It is now owned by the Forestry Commission and rented to a tenant who uses it as a holiday home.
Robert and Sybellla Cowan lived there from 1855 until 1872 when they moved to Blacklyne to the south of English Kershope. Their 7th child was my great grandmother Catherine.
Roberts parents were William and Janet Robson, his second wife.
Black Lyne is now a scout bothy. Found it on the net with pictures which should interest you
Both places are in the Longtown registration district in Cumberland
Hope this helps your search

Cowan is a very common name in the Scottish Borders/Dumfries

going by the places stated you will have to highlight the area between Hawick, Newcastleton, Canonbie, Langholm and surrounding areas

Re: Harden - in the pass the Harden Estate spread for Between Hawick, Roberton & Newcastleton

If you go online to the National Library of Scotland - Maps site and look at the old maps of the area - is free to use
