Megan-
Thank you so much for your quick answer.
I would guess that your Eleanor was not a sibling in my family but rather a cousin:
1. she stayed in Ireland, while all 3 of my siblings emigrated
2. the pattern of children's names is different.

On the other hand, she certainly came from a nearby town to that of my family.
Given the state of the Irish records, we are very lucky to know this much!

Here is what I know abourt Arthur McQuillan and Margaret Carr:
children that I know about so far (presumably all born in the same township in Clones, Co. Monaghan):
Mary McQuillan (1814-1891, died in Blackfriars, Glasgow
John McQuillan (1820-1883), my gr-grandfather, died in Prestwich, Lancashire, joined Royal Engineers at age 22 in Glasgow, and was discharged there at age 43 in 1863.  3 sons went into military.  Surviving descendants living in UK and US.
James McQuillan (1831-1991), married and died in Calton, Glasgow. 3 sons also went into military. Surviving descendants living in Scotland.

Hello, I'm very excited to read this! I've just started researching this line of my family and I have the marriage record for my ancestors James McQuillan and Susan Conway that I think names his parents as Arthur McQuillan and Margaret Kerr. Is this the right family? The witnesses look like Patrick and Roseanne McQuade which seems to match this thread.

Census records show that James and Susan's daughter Margaret (my direct ancestor) was born in England while her older and younger siblings were born in Glasgow. I haven't chased down that birth record yet but maybe the family visited James' brother John?

Hi Ansimi (what is your name?)
Yes, you have the right family.
Yes, Margaret Ann McQuillan b Bet. Apr-Jun 1865, see register Salford, England - Salford  8d 85.  I did not spend the $ to get the actual birth certificate.
death 08 Dec 1923 Partick, Glasgow, Scotland Yes, all her siblings were born in Glasgow.
Arthur 03 Feb 1857 - 21 Jun 1910
Mary 24 Jun 1859 - 16 Jul 1895
John 12 Jul 1866 - 01 Oct 1899
James 09 Oct 1868 - 18 May 1892
Patrick 09 Oct 1868 - 24 Oct 1868
Michael  19 Jul 1871 - 21 Dec 1901

With quite a lot of research I have uncovered the reason that Margaret was born in Salford.  Her parents went to England in 1865 because James' older brother John (1820-1883), my gr- grandfather, was admitted to Heydock Lodge Lunatic Asylum, half-way between Liverpool and Manchester.  He had retired from the Royal Engineers in 1863 after 21 years of good service, being discharged to Glasgow, the home of his sister Catherine (1829-1877).
Apparently, by 1865 his mental health failed, and the family had to find an asylum for him in England.

please tell me your descent from Margaret.  Do you have family stories or history from the 19C?
Regards,
John

I'll send you a personal message with my lineage and my email address.

Hi John-
that is really interesting!  Nellie is my 3rd cousin.  I could not find your tree on Ancestry.com - can you give me a link?

Do you know if Nellie has any McQuillan family photos or stories?  i would love to have anything that you can share.  i have photos of John McQuillan, 1858-1923, my grandfather, who was Nellie's 1st cousin, 2x removed.
Many thanks,
John McQuillan
