1841 Census....Handyside
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 22:01 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if SKS had access to the 1841 census for Midlothian.
I have a William HANDYSIDE born 1827 @ Fountain Bridge. Parents John (dob 1803 Edinburgh Parish) and Mary (dob 1793 Glencross) Handyside. In 1851 He was at The Hirsel in Coldstream as a Gardner Journeyman.
Thanks

Hi Sarah,

I don't have access to the 1841 Cencus but I had a look in the British Vital Records to see if I could find anything more about your William Handyside.

It seems he was an only child (or the only child registered) to John Handyside and Mary Pollock as there were no other siblings listed.

Other details: Date of birth 22nd April 1827
Recorded in: Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Collection: St Cuthbert

Thanks Anne. Any bits of info are useful. I have him born at Fountain Bridge on 15 Jan 1827.. Could he have been bapt on 22 April @ St Cuthberts. As you say he seems to have been an only child, his mother being about 37 at his birth. Don't you wonder at the stories behind the facts sometimes. His father seems to have been 10 years younger than his mother. He is one of the people I have quite a lot of info on including 3 photos as a young man, middle aged and an old man. He died aged 90 having progressed from Gardner Journeyman at The Hirsel (Sir Alec Douglas Home's estate in Clodstream in 1851 to being Head Gardner at Buil Hill Estate near Manchester.

Thought you might like to see this Handyside grave in the famous Warriston cemetery in Edinburgh.

I know I'm sorry. I'm trying to find a relative of mine who is buried in the same cemetery but have had no luck as the graves have never been documented and the
grave yard its self is a mess. Just ran across this photo while searching and remembered the name Handyside from your post. I wish these photographer who take these fantastic photos and then post them would think about us lowely researchers!

The husband's name on MI looked like a three-letter word ending in AE. Could it be Jessie Handyside who married Alexander RAE in June 1845?  Marriage was noted in both St Cuthbert's and Liberton parish records.

Sarah, you should make that trip to Edinburgh, would be pleased to show you around Handyside "sites"

Have info that implies that my William HANDYSIDE's father had died by the 1841 census. So.... now I am looking for the death of John HANDYSIDE b abt 1803 wife Mary Pollock. In 1823 John married Mary Pollock @ St Cuthbert's and 1827 they were in Fountain Bridge (birth of William) (In 1841 the family "might" be in Lasswade minus John.)
Thanks
