It really does want to make you cry,  :'(  for a country that is big on local and national records and big on recording its own history,  they can't for the life of them organize to keep any census records. In 100 years I would love someone in my family to be able to have access to what census records there are. And I'd be really interested to see what my parents wrote on the 1966 census just have to hold out another 40-50 years before they become available.

Maybe we should have a rootschat census. But how will they access it in a hundred years. ??? Maybe Trystan and Sarah can have their grandchildren release it on a certain date :o
Just a thought ;D

Thanks for all of the census info Piedstilt - but what an outrage!!!
We usually do what the British do - and they have been keeping their records for hundreds of years !!
Does anyone know if Australia are retaining theirs ??
I thought the powers that be were getting somewhere last time - at least they gave us a choice.  This privacy act is so frustrating - obviously no genealogists in that lot and not many of us will be around in 100 years - but there will be plenty more of us by then  ;)
Are you a member of the NZSG Piedstilt ?  The information that you have gathered would create a 'Land of the Long Black Cloud' - thunderstorm!!!!!

Maybe you Kiwis should photocopy (or scan on the computer for those who have scanners) your filled in copies of the census forms before you hand them back to the enumerator. The govt doesnt need to know that you kept copies. :)  Your copies can be filed with other census records you hold in your genealogy files.

The same can be done for any census in any country at any time. :)

Thats what I would do - wish I had though to do that back in 1996 - the last NZ census I filled out. :(

I'll second all of that!!
After telling all & sundry to "make sure you tick the box to make archives available in 100 years",only to discover there was no box >:(
I wasn't that impressed with the information requested either. As you say, no family historians in that lot ???

I'm not really sure that the Privacy Act covers the return of census, even if it did I'm sure the Government would find some way to stop it happening. ;D

I think I might have another go at the minister - all that information seems suspiciously modern and I'm still not clear as to when censuses were first taken. It is hard to believe that in less paranoic times someone didn't think to hang on to at least some of the returns.

The trouble is that because the census is administered by the Dept of Statistics, they are really only interested in the numbers - ie, incomes, how many loos, etc  - rather than all the interesting bits.

A great idea to photocopy our own forms for our records. Pity we didn't think of that at the time - now we'll have to wait another ten years! Not that the questions were all that interesting ...

I'm a sort of member of the NZSG, Pauashell - trying to decide whether to renew my subscription or not. I'd be surprised if they didn't know all this; they seem fairly clued up on the efforts to get BMD records on line - another thing that the powers-that-be seem to find hard to get their heads round!

Cheers,

Ros
