KIMBER, COOKE, CHILDES in Hampshire
« on: Monday 04 October 04 08:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,   I am researching RICHARD JOHN KIMBER, b.1829 at St. John's, Portsea and who arrived in Australia in 1851.  He returned to England and we have a letter dated 1908 from East Warwick.   However, his death cannot be located either in England or Australia.

Richard's father was HENRY KIMBER, bc. 1791, St. Mary's, Portsea and who married SARAH COOKE, b.1803, in Soberton, Hampshire in 1822.

Sarah's parents were WILLIAM COOKE, b.1773 in Bishop's Waltham and ANN CHILDES, b.1781, Holy Trinity, Gosport and who married in 1802 in Bishops Waltham.

I would appreciate any information or advice as to proceeding backwards.   Thanks.   Marie in Sydney

Hi Marie,

Possibly stating the obvious here, but have you tried the IGI - Portsea is included on that - for some possible candidates?   Do you have any ideas about when any of these people died.  A very quick look at the burial index doesn't seem to help much (it only goes up to 1837).

Marie
Just noticed your posting for Kimber. I came across this name for the first time yesterday when researching my Fraser line. I have a Ann Warner Kimber marrying Roderick Fraser in about 1836. They married in Alverstoke which is very near Portsea and I know they had family living in Portsea.
This is a new branch of the family for me if I find out any more I'll let you know. If you find any connections for Ann I would be grateful for some help!

Hi Marie, Richard John Kimber was my 3x great grandfather. Richard actually went from Sydney, to Warwick in Queensland Australia. Warwick is near Toowoomba. I am actually passing by his old property tomorrow in my way home! I am happy to help you out. Cheers, Nikki.
