1851 census lookup please - Young
« on: Sunday 12 March 06 23:24 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Young born about 1824, his wife Mary born about 1818, daughter Ann born 1847 and daughter Elespeth born 1849.  Any sign of this family in the 1851 census, probably at Spittal.

Hi there,

The 1851 census is now available to search online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a 'pay per view' type basis.  You might be lucky, as quite a few people have transcriptions of the 1851 census for various parishes that they can look up for you (I have Hawick and Castleton) - but if you don't get a response within a few days, you might have to go down the scotlands people route.

Cheers,

Hi,

You may have already found this on Scotland’s people I haven’t been checking the board much recently but if not I think this is the right family. If it isn’t let me know and I’ll do another search.

Hi

Thanks very much for the lookup.  It is indeed a very good match to my Youngs but unfortunately not quite right.  Thomas is about the right age but probably born Rothbury.  Mary was about 6 years older than Thomas and born in Spittal so doesn't fit.  Eldest child was Ann born 5 Nov 1847 and lived to at least 1876 and I would have expected her to be with her parents.  Elespeth was born 25 Aug 1849 so would be only 1 at census time.  There is no Janet in the family and my source of information is the family bible which would have recorded a birth even if the child didn't survive long, as the bible also records deaths of some of the children at a young age.  I wouldn't be surprised if occupation of my Youngs were basket maker/ Hawker etc because I believe them to be from the Yetholm Gypsies.  The family you have found is probably related to mine but there were a few Thomas Youngs around.  From the birth places of there children both before and after 1851 I would expect the family to be in Spittal.  It was very good of you to search and I would be delighted if you could come up with another match, otherwise I will try a search at the weekend.

What source are you using?

kind regards

Pete

Hi Emma

Thanks for the message.  Coincidentally, I bought the Maxwell transcription of the 1851 census for Yetholm from you off ebay recently to look for Youngs.  Notwithstanding that I didn't find Thomas Young and family I consider the Yetholm document to be excellent quality and good value and hopefully will be of further use if I link my Youngs to the Yetholm Youngs.

I appreciate your efforts to locate Thomas Young and family around this area.  Tell me, was Spittal considered as north or south of the border in those days?

regards
Peter

Thanks Emjay,

I thought that was how it was but I was just hoping there was a part north of the border where I haven't already searched.

Peter
