Walsh and Maloney to Australia

Richard Walsh and Mary Maloney married in Melbourne, Victoria in 1840. They would have been very early arrivals to the colony - so early, in fact, that I can find no record of their arrival. Just their marriage, and the 6 children they had.

Nor do I know when they died! But the story is that they came from Clare. At a guess, Richard was born 1810 plus or minus, much the same for Mary. Their children (as a possible clue to parents) were Hannah, Mary, Henry Thomas, John, Catherine and Agnes.

We in Oz are actively trying to find more, but maybe someone else has tripped over this couple.

Don't know if this helps, but I have a John McNamara b 1822 Cloonagro, Feakle, Tulla, Co. Clare whose wife was Margaret Walsh/Welsh b abt 1824, Feakle, Co. Clare.
John McNamara (27) and wife Margaret (Welsh/Walsh) (26) and family- Patrick (3) and John (1)  travelled to Port Philip, Australia from Co. Clare, Ireland arriving on 26 June 1850 on the Bussorah Merchant (Reel No 2145).

They settled in London Bridge, Burra, Queanbeyan and John's obituary states that he was 'almost first to settle in the district known as Burra, and its development owes a great deal to his foresight and pluck in the years gone by."
Margaret's parents were Michael Walsh/Welsh and Mary O'Loughlin, also of Co.Clare.
From memory I'm sure there was another Walsh on the same ship but it wasn't Margaret's brother as I first thought it could have been.
I got the shipping information off a Victorian Shipping website by chance so you may like to check there as well.

Burra is about 40km east of where I live, still a small country community over-run by horses (hobby farms). Small world?

Unfortunately, Walsh is a very common name in Clare & records that go back to the early 1800s are not readily available online. My gr-gr-grandfather was James Walsh born in Clare around 1825. He settled in Cork, although his daughter Mary (my gr-grandmother) was born in Westmeath in the 1850s. So he took a roundabout route to get to Cork. I still haven't tracked down where in Clare he came from.

Is the James Walsh you mention (your g g grandrather); the same one who ended up in Australia and married Mary Maloney in Melbourne in 1840.

If so do you know if he was a convict and do you know the names of his parents.

Agnes Walsh married James Talbot.
They had a daughter Adelaide Talbot who married Roland Dunstan Cobcroft - my grandparents. One of their 8 children was William Paul Cobcroft - my father.

acw9455 my James Walsh is a different person. He died in Cork in 1908. Possibly related to your Walsh ancestors but very difficult to make connections in Clare
